"Just as Awesome as it was when I read it years ago"
The Shining is a great book. I read it years ago when it first came out. Then came the movie - loved by millions... but if you've only seen the movie - it's quite different from the book and not as good as the book. If you haven't read this book you won't be disappointed. Actually you will be disappointed that you thought the movie was great until you realize the book is even better.
The narrator is excellent. I read another post that complained that his enunciation is very precise and it is. Crisp, clear and exact. Perhaps the other person would prefer a person who speaks in a lazy manner - something I personally don't care for. I give this narrator 5 stars for the excellent reading that really brought SKs book of wonderful prose to life!
I'll always like this book - it's a keeper. Except now, when I next watch the movie - I know I'll be wondering "Why did the producer change that in the movie - why didn't they stick to the book?" The movie would have been so much better.
"Awesome Book"
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. There were a lot of twists and turns that kept you eager to read more - and prevented the book from being predictable!
If you're wondering whether it's worth a credit - It Certainly Is and you won't regret it.
This is one of those books that I'll read again in time.
"Exceeded my expectatations"
This turned out to be a really good book. I had read a couple of negative reviews as well as positive ones and decided to find out for myself - and liked the book considerably. Really well done and a very enjoyable ride into the supernatural. I hope the author comes out with another book.
"A Bit of a Departure but still an Awesome Read!"
The only reason that I gave an overall rating of 4 is because this book, the setting/place, greatly departs from the previous books... I don't say it departs is a bad way, but I'm still thinking it over. Having said that, I'd readily purchase the book again!
If you're an Odd fan - Buy it, read it. Odd is considerably more 'no-nonsense/ruthless' in this novel - which is good to see.
Dean appears to be taking Odd to a new level and it appears from this book that all bets are off as to what that direction could be.
Great job Mr. Koontz, can't wait for the next one!
"Awesome Read"
I found this book - both content and delivery (nararrator) excellent. What a great book and one I think I'll read again at some point in the near future. The way the nararrator reads the book - is 'right in keeping' with the main character and perfectly rendered.
The concept of the book is also excellent, because it touches on the technology we're building and the perceptions or prejudice that may result from its use in the future.
I'm glad I didn't listen to some of the other reviews (sorry guys) that downgraded the book.... as I found it to be absolutely excellent.
I recommend it.
Excellent book!
"Book might be good but the narrarator is AWEFUL"
The book might be good, but the narrarator is SO BAD that I can't tell. The narrator ruins the story because the way he makes the characters talk is so un-natural that it distracts one from the story.
I gave the story a single star - Sorry Peter Straub - not because the story is not a good one - probably is - but the Narraration is Terrible and so distracting that I cannot tell one way or the other whether the story is any good or not.
The inflection he uses is incredibly un-natural. Nobody talks the way he talks for the characters. Choppy and the inflection is way off. Monotone in many places and just plain weird... I can't describe it because it's so strange.
It's like listening to a mental patient or someone from another planet who knows the language but doesn't understand inflection.
I have tried to listen to it over and over but turn it off after 10-20 minutes because of the horrible narrartion. It's so bad and distracting from the story (and nearly every character sounds the same) - that I don't even know after 2 hours into the story - exactly who the characters ARE!
I'd buy the paperback book and read it - BUT DON'T RECOMMEND YOU PURCHASE THIS BOOK DUE TO THE NARRATORS INCREDIBLE LACK OF ABILITY TO NARRARATE.
I listened to the sample and the bit that plays doesn't sound too bad... but boy did I find out real fast what a mistake I'd made by wasting a credit.
Whoever decided to use this guy really screwed it up for Peter Straubs chances to make any money from Audible sales.
The producer (if there was one for this book) should have known within minutes that the choice of narrarator was a big mistake! Personally, I'd demote the producer for lack of judgement and probably for intended sabotage and a willing attempt to ruin any attempt to make money from the sale of the book!
Peter Straub should have been able to intervene to stop this deplorable attempt to destroy what is probabaly a good book and have this narrarator replaced.
Peter, you can probably write off any real sales of this book - except for those making the same sucker mistake I made.
I have a couple hundred (litterally) Audible books in my library and occasionally there's a bad narrarator - but this one IS THE WORST EVER.
I'll remember the name of this Narrarator and avoid any other books read by him! Get another job!
And fire the producer for their inept choice and attempt to sabotage what is otherwise no doubt a good book.
It disgusts me that I wasted a credit on this book!
"Too much 'Flowery Speach'"
The story IS a good one and the narration is excellent. But the flowery speach detracts from the story. I read the first book of the series and got about 1/2 way through this one and simply couldn't take the flowery speach anymore. It's a distraction from an otherwise good storyline.
One finds themselves 'translating' the flowery speach ALL THE TIME - and it causes the story to 'stop flowing'.
I don't expect to read anymore of these books.
"Absolutely Magnificent!!!"
This is an awesome story, absoluetly magnificent.
I only wish it were 100 hours instead of 50! The character development and story line flowed like - well, like time itself.
Stephen King never disappoints and this will be marked as one of the best books ever written by this author... and though all of his works are "Great Works", this one in particular is outstanding.
From the first minute that this book started I could not put it down.
Keep up the great work Mr. King!
"A Must Read"
This book was absolutely awesome and I hope to read more from this talented author! The narration was supurb as always, the storyline well thought out and not predictable. Excellent attention to detail made the story vibrant and real. This is a must read book!
"Super! Difficult to put down"
I was pleasantly suprised by this book and found it difficult to put down. It's funny, well written (and very well narrated) with an excellent plot that leaves you wishing the book was longer. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a book that will make them laugh at every turn. Extremely entertaining!!!
