"What am I listening to?"
I'm 15ish hours into the book, and I'm sitting here and saying to myself, "What the heck is this?
I am following what's going on, but I am listening to this juvenile sex stuff - and then there is a commune where someone is rapping young girls under 10.
Yes, there are some very interesting parts to this book, but then I have to sit and wait till a sex scene is over. That's crazy!
I mean, what is this, and do I want to even fill my head with this type of stuff?
I think I'll switch books for now. I don't know if I will come back to this one.
"Antisemitism loud and clear"
It was very hard for me to rate this book. The story was very interesting and well written. However, every-time the narrator called Fagen "The Jew", it twisted my stomach. There is an underlying tone in this book from the beginning to the very end, that says, Jews equal the devil and Christians are the good people. It was quite disturbing.
If it weren't for that I would have given this book 5 stars. Because of that I want to give this book 1 star.
Great narrator.
"Very low quality audio"
The audio quality of this book was so bad, I could not listen to it. I gave the Story 3 stars only because I had to put something in there so I could write this review.
I've read Dostoevsky before and loved his writing. This book may be equally as good, but I would never know.
I'm going to see if I could find this book with a different narrator. I suggest you do the same!
"Sloppy Editing"
When I started to listen to this book my air conditioner was on and I found the book interesting. Then the weather changed and off went the air conditioner, and when I continued to listen to the book, that's when I noticed it. Very sloppy audio editing. When the narrator speaks I can hear ambient noise. When he stops for a pause after a sentence, the ambient noise is gone. So it is constantly switching from hearing the ambient noise to silence in the background which makes it very hard for me to flow with the book. It's distracting. So - I'll wait till next summer comes and the AC goes back on, to continue this book, and then after that I may change the rating. Narrator is good.
"This book is an amazing experience! WoW!"
At first I was not familiar with Victor Hugo's style of writing. It would start to get very interesting and then all of a sudden he was off on another topic. That knocked me for a loop, until I got into the swing of things, and treated each new topic as a new book. In the end it all came together and was an amazing experience.
Out of both unabridged versions of this book on audible, I found George Guidall to be the better narrator. I had the opportunity to listen to the first few hours of the other version, and could not understand the narrator very well. I was very happy to get this one where I had no problem understanding the English. Great book.
"Couldn't stop listening!"
I put this book on at night before I went to sleep, and I had about 8 hours left to the book. I wound up loosing a whole night's sleep because it was so interesting I couldn't stop listening! Great book!
