Pessimism is ubiquitous throughout the Western World as the pressing issues of massive debt, high unemployment, and anemic economic growth divide the populace into warring political camps. Right-and Left-wing ideologues talk past each other, with neither side admitting the other has any good ideas. In American Gridlock, leading economist and political theorist H. Woody Brock bridges the Left/Right divide, illuminating a clear path out of our economic quagmire.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I don't think it would be possible to make this a 4 or 5 star.

Would you ever listen to anything by H. Woody Brock again?

    Nope, never, nada, not even

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    Full of himself.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from American Gridlock: Why the Right and Left Are Both Wrong - Commonsense 101 Solutions to the Economic Crises?

I would cut from the second word to the last word.

    "Excellent Jack reacher novel."

What made the experience of listening to Worth Dying For the most enjoyable?

The pacing and the unexpected turns of the story. You can see things coming but they still blow you away when they actually get there with some little unexpected twist.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the fact that the character reacts to the bad guys in a totally non-politically correct fashion, but also in a totally satisfying manner

What about Dick Hill’s performance did you like?

Dick Hill has the perfect voice, pacing and inflection to BE Jack Reacher.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. And I will probably listen to it again hopefully in one sitting.

The season of gift-giving is here, and this year we've got something special for our members: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Yuletide whodunit "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle". In this holiday-themed short story, Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson, follow the trail of a lost hat and a Christmas goose through the streets of London and into a rapidly expanding mystery.

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready
    Overall

    Story
    (2720)

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the author would have just stuck to the story without going off and these long anti-American rants over an over again!

What was most disappointing about John Irving’s story?

John Irving obviously hates America and spent half the very long book going into these long diatribes about evil Americans and the Vietnam War. Which, by the way, added nothing to the storyline.

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The only saving grace to this whole audio book is the performance. His ability to change voices worked very well

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This book made me all of the above, Angry, Sad, and disappointed because of the authors departure from the basic story line. IF you want to write an Anti-American book about the history of the Vietnam War do it, but don't try and hide it in an otherwise good story.

    Any additional comments?

I will try and avoid this author in the future

They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

Being President doesn't make things any easier, Jack Ryan finds out, especially when trouble's brewing in Moscow and China. Blending the exceptional realism and authenticity that are his hallmarks with intricate plotting, razor-sharp suspense, and a remarkable cast of characters, this is Clancy at his best - and there is none better.

Would you try another book from Tom Clancy and/or Frank Muller?

Clancy - absolutely. Muller - no on your life

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator was trying too hard. Tom Clancy books are very macho and this narrator was trying too hard and being way too overdramatic. The whole book is done in a very breathless / breathy style which doesn't fit a Clancy book at all. Made me think of a new actor in a community play trying way too hard and over acting.I bought this book originally in 2003 and could not finish it for that reason. 10 years later and I going to try and finish it again because I like Tom Clancy so much, Don't know if I will be able to complete it this time as the narration is SO bad.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes, Everything about Clancy's books are marvelous.

Is it possible that there exists an ancient mystery that holds the secret of America's future? That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the global economy? That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America? That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come? Before its end as a nation, there appeared in ancient Israel nine specific warnings and omens of national destruction - these same Nine Harbingers are now manifesting in America with profound ramifications.

Here is the gripping story of a brutally-murdered New York psychiatrist, the ex-cop who must crack the high-profile case, and the only six suspects: the doctor's own patients. It's a blockbuster with twists and turns that will keep you up nights and suspense that "never lags" (The Washington Post). And it is a crowning achievement - by the man who wears the crown as king of the thriller.
