    Any additional comments?

I don't understand all of the great reviews others have given this series. I found the story convoluted and felt irritated many times at the slow pace. I had a hard time remembering who was who and where I was at in the story. Some of this may have been the result of the horrible narration. The concept was great but the execution was poor to say the least. I have read/listened to scores of fantasy novels and have to say this is my least favorite to date.

Anasoma, jewel of the Mahruse Empire, has fallen. As Caldan and his companions flee the city, horrors from the time of the Shattering begin to close in. With Miranda's mind broken by forbidden sorcery, Caldan is forced to disobey the most sacrosanct laws of the Protectors if he is to have any chance of healing her. But when one of the emperor's warlocks arrives to take control of him, he begins to suspect his burgeoning powers may be more of a curse than a blessing.

What would have made Blood of Innocents better?

Better character development and a clearer storyline. I am still not clear who the bad guys are. It seems like everyone but Calden, Marisa and Felise (sp?) are outright bad or suspicious in one way or another. Also, Calden, the main character, is so naive it's ridiculous. Someone so gifted should not be so dumb as to make so many bad decisions. The author could have found other ways to advance the story. For instance, Calden escapes from the Protectors, tries to earn some money by gambling on a Dominion game betting one of his craftings. The game is fixed, he loses his crafting. He goes back to the Warlocks house where he knew to be gold only to find it cleaned out...except...he finds a trinket and a bag full of gold. I think the writer could have figured out a better way for Calden to get to this point in the story.

Has Blood of Innocents turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Nope. Not at all.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Still waiting for one.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The idea for how magic is practiced is pretty good.

    Any additional comments?

It is taking to long for the author to reveal elements of the plot. I feel like I should know more about the world and it's key characters than I do at this point.
