  • Absolute Friends

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By John le Carre
    • Narrated By John le Carre

By chance and not by choice, Ted Mundy, eternal striver, failed writer, and expatriate son of a British Army officer, used to be a spy. But that was in the good old Cold War days when a cinder-block wall divided Berlin and the enemy was easy to recognize.

Ann says: "Le Carre has a point of view"
What disappointed you about Absolute Friends? plot that can be followed..THE STORY SAID NOTHING AND COULD NOT BE FOLLOWED.i HAVE AUDIO LISTENED TO 19 novels by John leCarre....Enjoyed most all the books. This was not what I anticipated.John most have wrote it on a bad day.

What could John le Carre have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Get rid of the music ,played between sections.

What didn’t you like about John le Carre’s performance?

This was not John leCarre.....Some one borrowed his name.

What character would you cut from Absolute Friends?

GUT the whole story and start over.

    Any additional comments?

    I'm still a fan.One bad book doesn't make a bad man

  • Mr. Mercedes: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Marci says: "King and Patton create a winning combo"
    "Not one of his best."
What did you like best about Mr. Mercedes? What did you like least?

The storyline was interesting and kept you hooked until near the end.
The end was drawn out and ,so unlike the great writing of King.
It would remind you of the ending of a Grade B movie.
It took the edge off the whole novel.

Would you recommend Mr. Mercedes to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes...But I would preface my recommend with...Good but not Great..

Did Will Patton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    all around GREAT.

Do you think Mr. Mercedes needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No.. Nothing left to tell.

    Any additional comments?

I've read other work by King and enjoyed every book to various degrees, but,I must say, this was not his best work..

  • The Affair: A Jack Reacher Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control. Local sheriff Elizabeth Deveraux has a thirst for justice - and an appetite for secrets.

    Melinda says: ""All Aboard!""
    "Lee Child's good one"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

the yarn is well written,The narration is 1st class.the story held your intrest to the end.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I've listened to many books and Dick Hill is,beyond doubt, one of the best in the audio book field

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

YES...We could have done without the lovemaking scenes. It degrades ,what is a well written book, and cheapens it downward, adding nothing of importance to the story.
