If you could sum up The Odyssey in three words, what would they be?

I don't think it's really possible to sum up The Odyssey in three words. But if I were pressed to do it, the three words would be: epic, adventure, and compelling.

Have you listened to any of Ian McKellen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of Sir Ian's other performances, but I will be on the look out for them! He's fabulous! I was concerned about listening to this instead of reading the print book since it's assigned for a class, but I believe i'm getting just as much out of it by listening as I would by reading.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    It's over 13 hours long!

    Any additional comments?

My only issue with this performance is the high pitched tones that are used to signify the beginning and ending of each book. It's quite painful when I'm listening with headphones!

  • The Iliad

    • ABRIDGED (8 hrs and 50 mins)

Combining the skills of a poet and scholar, Robert Fagles, winner of the PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation and a 1996 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, brings the energy of contemporary language to this enduring heroic epic. He maintains the drive and metric music of Homer’s poetry, and evokes the impact and nuance of the Iliad’s mesmerizing repeated phrases in what Peter Levi calls “an astonishing performance."

Would you consider the audio edition of The Iliad to be better than the print version?

I started reading the print version of The Iliad for a book club and I was having troubles getting through all the battle scenes. Listening to the audio edition was much easier.

What does Derek Jacobi and Maria Tucci bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I'm able to understand the pronunciation of all the character's names much easier. Also, there are a few times when, in reading the print version, it seemed to go from first person to third. Listening to Derek Jacobi narrate those parts made me understand why.
