"Not what you expect"
Im not sure about how I feel about these short stories and I really dont understand why popular authors are made to write them. They always kind of have an "Im not really into this but I have to do it" kind of feel. The stories werent bad but its hard for me to really get locked into a short story like I do regular novels. As far as the performance goes...I like Len Cariou in all of the other MC books, he is usually spot on and as good as the previous reader of Harry Bosch, Dick Hill. However, for some reason he sounds weird in "Suicide Run", almost like he didnt have the art of narrating down pat yet. Had I listened to "Suicide Run" first I would have never gone onto other Harry Bosch books because of how weird Cariou sounded. Overall not bad, for 3.99 its good entertainment....exhausting a whole credit on the other hand for this is not worth it. You pay 14.99 for a gold membership so why would anyone give up a whole credit for a book that costs 3.99??
"Not this best in the Frank Quinn series"
Yea, I always enjoy lutz's frank Quinn books
Ending was just like the rest of the book....just so so.
Scott Brick always brings characters to life
No
Definitely the worst frank Quinn book but still an enjoyable listen
"5 stars"
Coben takes a break from his Bolitar series thank goodness and writes another stand alone. IMO, coben's stand alone books are terrific and this is no different, matter of fact, this may be his best one. Plenty of mystery and twists and turns to keep you into the book the whole way. Scott brick as always does a great job as well. Dont miss this one.
"Best of the best"
This book is amazing. It has every emotion possible runnin thru it. There are sad times, happy times, fun times and boring times. It really makes you think about your own life and have you done what you want to do and are you living the way you think is the right way to live. The Testament makes you think about all of that. I love Grisham's books as well as many others like Michael Conelly, James Burke......but The Testament just does something to me when I listen to it, it puts me in a transe almost...its that deep to me. If youre looking for a lot of action and suspense this isnt the book for you. However, if you are looking for a book that will make you think about what good you have done and how much better you could be.....this is the book you need to listen to. I have listened to it at least 5 times and I get something different out of it each listen. Frank Muller does his thing, just an amazing reader. Too bad he isnt around any longer. Every book he read was just a touch better with his narration.
"MC at his best"
Where to start with this one.....this was the best Harry to date imo and maybe the best book Ive read this year. MC has proved once again why he is one of the top 2 or 3 mystery writers out there.
Now for the bad. Something seems to have happened to Len Cariou's voice. He has always done a wonderful job bringing Harry to life. I used to listen to Cariou and think he his Harry Bosch. Although, since the "Overlook" something has changed with his voice. I first noticed it in "Suicide Run". His voice sounded real strained, like he was struggling to get through each line. I chalked it up to being a half a** effort because it was a short story and ignored it. Instead of listening to "Suicide Run" I bought the book because I just couldnt listen to Cariou. Well, I download the "Drop" and sure enough, Cariou's voice is still sounding weird. I dont know what has happened but it is now a challenge to listen to him. If you dont understand what I am saying go listen to "Lost Light" or any of his previous Harry Bosch books and you will hear this difference.
Cant fault MC for Cariou so I give the book a 5 out of 5. But if you have not bought the audio version yet, I suggest you by the print version of this one.
"Good story, reader struggled"
Grisham wrote a pretty good book here. I liked the story and while not his best, still worth the listen. However, I didnt like Dennis Boutsikaris much at all. His tone was pleasant enough but his delivery speed seemed much too quick for my liking. Also, he makes it tough to discern between characters....he makes all of the characters sound alike which makes you really have to concentrate while listening. With Boutsikaris there is no day dreaming and then coming back to Earth and being able to identify which chartcter is talking. I found myself often hitting my 30 second playback.
"Perfect!!"
Another homerun by James Lee Burke. Story is amazing and you wont be able to stop listneing once you get started. Also, Will Patton is his usual smooth self narrating this book. Burke and Patton are a tough team to beat....there's no duo better than them.
"In between series"
I had finished all the Harry Bosch books and looking for another series to fill my time. I was put on to Sanford and his main guy, Davenport. I found this story very slow, especially in the middle and had a hard time getting to the end. Ive heard great things about Sandford so I think Im going to give him another try, it just wont be listening. This narrator made my top 10 list of bad narrators. You could not tell which character was speaking because he had one voice. The good narrators have a different voice for each of the main characters. This guy was pretty bad.
"Very entertaining!!"
This was a great book...Connelly created Harry with this story and whats amazing is, his first Harry book is as good as his last. There are a couple silly parts, for example, at one time Harry catches 2 detectives following him and he handcuffs them to a tree. Other than that its a great listen. Dick Hill is amazing as the narrator as well.
"Mmmmm....ok I guess"
I have listened to almost all of the Bosch series and this is by a long shot my least favorite. I don't know why it didn't suck me in like harry usually does. It was something about the characters in the story, they just were not interesting to me like most of Connellys characters usually are. Although, dick hill was amazing as always. If you like hills works you may want give it a try.
