Let's get one thing clear: Jonathan Maberry is one of the very best writers of the zombie, vampire, conflict with (living) humans genera and i suspect his previous life as a Marshal Arts writer is the reason.
I don't normally write any reviews but this time i just had to voice how irritating and distracting the narration as during this story. Instead of enjoying a good story, I kept thinking "has the narration sped up" or why is this guy speed reading? It is so distracting! I know he was trying to convey a sense of urgency but it really turned me off!
I really liked the book; so much so that I've listened to this book twice. However, I don't remember than the narrator irritated me so muc the first time around. But I only noticed the issue when Mr. McLaren tried vocals where the characters were yelling. The narrator made me want to throw my tablet out the window to avoid that horrible vocalization. Yuck!
What robs this book of a 5 star rating from me is the feeling that many stories left me with the feeling the author either forgot to finish writing their story or simply ran out of plot line. To be hones there were at least 5 stories really well done & kept my full attention but for most of the remainder stories, the end came so abruptly I felt quite the jolt when I realised the narrator moved onto the next story.
I put off buying the first book for along time because the small preview really didn't do much for me but once I started, there was no way I could stop. Joseph Nassise's writing style, very clean & crisp; much like Jonathan Maberry. Anthony Bowden did a super job of narrating & best of all didn't make me cringe when he narrated female characters.
I recommend the Hunt Chronicle's wholeheartedly, credit well spent!
I wasn't too taken with this book when I started & listened to a few other books thinking to return this book in a day or so. For some reason I started listening again & my engagement with Kimberly Rae hit me big time. While Iike many. I know a bit about hoarders, I know very little about the effect of hoarding on family members. The author explained the "love/hate" that many family members feel towards the hoarder or indeed any addict family member very lucidly and with much compassion. I wish Kimberly Rae & her family a happy healthy future as I do anyone struggling with an addiction & it has effect on the family members.
This book is well worth the time & credit.
I haved listed to the vampire trilogy and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. There is so much action and drama that its hard to put down. I found myself thinking about the story between times i was able to set time aside to listen to the story. Without going too much into a spoiler alert, let me say that the characters were drawn to such a way that when one character got killed, i felt justice was served in the way "he" died because of the horrible way he dispatched one of the characters. I really felt a tightening in my chest when the "driver" died.
I will be waiting for book 2 of the Jim Chapel Mission series or pretty much any book David Wellington publishes: I have become a true fan of David Wellington!
This book, in my estimation is really geared towards people who are just getting into reading books or seeing movies involving demons, spirits & possessions. It's really basic information and more of a "something you should be aware of" if you are starting to play with your Ouji board a bit too much. I do like (love) my scary stories and have for years and I deeply regret the waste of a credit on this "story".
The voice of the narrator was not suited for this type of work although he spoke clearly and did have a vocal range to assume different charactors but I don't think even if the skills of Ray Porter, Ron McLarty or Sean Runnette could have saved this uninteresting effort of audibook. (just my humble opinion. i'm no writer myself) - m
I really hate to give any sort of negative review but this audio book is so awful I almost feel its my duty. I think what really makes book bad is the narration. Frequently the narration can really make or break a story it this book may not be as awful as I think it is just because of Lance Henriksen's naration. There isn't anything really wrong with Mr. Henriksen's narration, its just that he should have not been hired for this vocal. His voice was soft and almost soothing so the fright I should have felt when Ripley was fighting her alien and the Company has come to collect both her & the alien was just not there.
Save your credit or your $$ & run, don't walk away from this book!
I gave extra points for narration as Peter Bishop wasn't distracting trying to do voices he wasn't capable of as in other story & there was a tragic scene in one of the streets that Lyssa Graham wrote quite well. However I couldn't finish the book but did fast forward to the end.
Sympathy star scores aside, give this story a miss its just not worth the credit spent.
Thank you for reading my review.
This story could have been so much more than bits an pieces from "Midwich Cuckoo", 'The Day of the Triffids and "Alien'. It did have real moments of 'icky" and "eerie" but the inabilility of the narrator to do a credible male voice was really, realy distracting. Lyssa Graham did do a good job narrating but only the female voices. Sarah's characters were drawn okay; it was easy to feel really sad for the females who suddenly found themselves pregnant with these disgustingly awful babies but no reason is given or suggested as to why major events happened.
If the story had been much longer I could never have been able to listen to the end. With this story, it was touch and go all the way.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope I have helped.
I loved this story!
Although it is a very short story, it had to successfully make its point in a minimal number of words, every word counts in a short story. The rising tensions in the story were carried well till the end. I truly was on the edge of my seat and very sorry to have it end.
Darlene Allen did a commendable job of narration and I understand this story is Geof Ganders first published story. Well done both of you! I will keep on the lookout for your next work!
