Lt. Col. Jon Smith, an army research doctor and secret agent attached to Covert-One, is tapped to lead a team to Wednesday Island, an icy patch of land between the northern coast of Canada and the Earth's magnetic Pole. There, the remains of a mysterious plane were discovered during a routine educational expedition. The plane seems to be a Russian spy plane, and the Russian government secretly revealed to the U.S. president that a lot of very dangerous anthrax may be on board.

    Story

Overall I did enjoy this story. I do agree with one other reviewer that the sound effects almost destroyed the listening experience. The reason I say the writer didn't do his research is that he didn't understand the U.S. Coast Guard and its ice breaking fleet. I spent 22 years in the USCG and my primary duty was on board Ice Breakers. I made 4 trips to the South Pole and 2 to the north.

Now the errors. Yes the Coast Guard is called the white fleet with the exception of Ice Breakers. In 1970 the Coast Guard changed all of its Ice Breakers to red for better observation. To date, they are still red. The WAGB (Ice Breaker fleet) ships are referred to as "Ice Breakers". Never Ice cutters. Coast Guard ships are always referred to as USCGC, or CGC followed by their name. Never USS. That's Navy terminology. Where the research has been excellent in all of the other Covert-One books this stands out as tacky and I think it could have been done better.

Very exciting story but with so much good research being spoiled by some very poor research.

A remote military research station sends out a frantic distress call, ending with a chilling final command: Kill us all! Personnel from the neighboring base rush in to discover everyone already dead - and not just the scientists, but every living thing for 50 square miles is annihilated: every animal, plant, and insect, even bacteria. The land is entirely sterile - and the blight is spreading. To halt the inevitable, Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma must unravel a threat that rises out of the distant past.

    Story

Now this was a fully enjoyable book for me. It brought back some memories, not about the subject as much as the described locations.

I hate to say this but I am older. In the 1980's my wife and I went up to the Owens valley. While there, we went to the ghost town Bodie. It was well described by Rollens. Even the buildings. Then the area around Lee Vining on hwy 395 was just as accurate. I also found some pictures of Mono lake.

That doesn't top it all though. Before my retirement from the Coast Guard I made four trips to the Antarctic. I was in Deepfreeze 68, 69, 71 and 72. On two of those cruises we went deep into the Weddell sea as far as the Filschner ice shelf. Even seeing the research station. We also became beset in the Iceland almost had to winter over. On all the trips I was stationed on board the USCSC Glacier, WAGB 4 which has since been scrapped.

Knowing the setting of the story made it more believe able and harder to put down. Enjoy the book and as you read it know it is more fact than fiction.

The mission seems simple enough: Extract a pharmaceutical magnate from Russian soil. But nothing is as it appears to be. A desperate call thrusts Captain Tucker Wayne and his stalwart military dog, Kane, into a frantic race to rescue the brilliant-but-deluded Abram Bukolov from a cadre of skilled assassins. Hunted and betrayed at every turn, Tucker and Kane must discover the truth behind a horror out of the ancient past that can be weaponized to terrorize the modern world. As time rapidly runs out, the deep and intimate bond between dog and soldier will be tested to the extreme.

Although this is the first of the Tucker Wayne series it never went through a stage where there was no excitement. I loved getting Cains perspective to what was happening too. Another thing I noticed was that Tucker wasn't a superman. He didn't always "kill" with only one shot to the head and he didn't win every fight. It made him sound more realistic as an agent than a lot of the writers do with their main characters. Im really looking to the next of the series,

This book was a typical Ludlam book. Got you going right off and kept your interest all the way to,the end. Ludlam does a good job of taking a good guy, turning the government or even the world against him and having him pull through at the end. Te plots are good and it's obvious he has to put a ton of research into his writing. Get it and you'll more than likely enjoy the entire story.

This was a good story which will make me want the remaining books in the series. In my opinion the narrator left some things to be desired. I didn't like the vocal tone. It was almost as if he was whispering. He also didn't bother to get the proper pronunciation of simple nautical terms. Almost everyone knows that forecastle isn't pronounced that way. It's more like (folk-sle). I guess all my years at sea made me critical. It is worth the read though so I can recommend it.

The formation of Rainbow Six sure made me think. Here again there is a group to take the place of the FBI and CIA. Better yet they. Could work around a lot of legalities. The way it ended was a real feel good climax. Listen to this all the way and you won't regret it.
