A severe suspension of disbelief is needed for this story in general. Seems like a background fiction for the so called indigo children discussed on late nite talk radio. The ability of human DNA to modify itself and anticipate changes, world events, etc. is the main problem I have with the premise.
First off, Carlos Hathcock, whom I have met, as a guest instructor at the school in 86 WAS NOT demeaned, etc. Read it to the end!. Yes it has a little too much gun tech jibber jabber, and there were a few plot/continuity flaws. Why we Snipers are getting all this TV and Movie and Book press is beyond me. Hunter has been writing since before gulfwar 1 and def. knows his stuff. At least his subjects and characters AGE! Some writers got jason bourne , jack ryan etc. aging 10-15 years over a 30 year period! or worse aging 30-40 years over a 10 year period! Without spoiling the plot/end the "Irish" team were a little too obvious.
This book is advertised as a spy thriller, terrorism type book in the likes of Flynn, Baldacci etc. It is clearly written by a brit with little or no actual expericence of the United States. The characters are complete stereotypes and cartoons. The president is a dope, the VP is the secret power behind him and the secret CEO of a huge pharma company. The members of the military are all kooks. The one sane and open minded person is a foreigner on the white house staff. The academics are all knowing open minded independent thinkers. They voluntarily work for USAMRID which is a military organization while ridiculing it. Quit if you dont like it. The terrorists are portrayed as these worldy open mined types who pine for the days of all religions getting along. Jesus this book is straight from the Neville Chamberlain school of being an ostrich.
Generally OK but the mine scenes are incredibly hard to follow and the reason might be they are this way on purpose. I'm no mine expert but good heavens this guy is lucky. Of course he's also a great mercenary fighter type too. I am an expert in that area and you can not be an expert shot, tactician, expert martial artist, world class geologist, etc. all at the same time before the age of 40 and in top shape. Maybe I should read other types. Pretty good reading, accents and voices.
More people died in this tiny town in VA than I could keep up with. The names, characters were extenstive and I often found myself asking ok this person was who? and was married to whom? and owed who money? etc. Also, I ALWAYS wonder like everyone else why Maxwell and King never get together. Great reading, accents, voices etc. Some leaps of faith, example the M.E. has time to spy on a person all day while in full medical practice. There are several of these.
I liked the book in general but every single chapter had as the current president a religious zealot who was a war monger and wanted to change the US into a theocracy. As if. It was one bigoted stereotype after another. I am NOT religous thats for sure. I can see a Bush bashing book when I read one. All the "reformers" and "moderates" are wonderful and anyone willing to be religious (conservative christians only mentioned not jews or islamics) etc. are the evil bad guys. HORRIBLE BIGOTRY THINLY WRAPPED IN A STORY.
I hate to write this, but I have no choice. What could have been a davinci type pseudo religious thriller degenerated into anti Catholic pontificating (pun intended). Near the end the author uses highly convoluted logic to biblically justify among other things, abortion. NO MAJOR RELIGION OF ANY TYPE CONDONES ABORTION. Whether or not one agrees, the fact is religions do not approve of it. This is but one example. A WASTE OF MONEY.
to read other reviews you would think this was some masterpiece, it was ok, but i will say there was alot of sex scenes which is ok but some rape scenes too, which frankly i fast forward through, as a former Marine and Cop im no sissy but damn some of that stuff was a bit too graphic and hard for me to listen to for relaxation or pleasure, also, the author seemed to be negative towards nobility using their positions to their advantage with edicts , etc. but when the heroine did it, he seem to make seem just fine and wonderful, tyranny is tyranny, no matter the intention
the premise of corporate intrigue and espionage was typical but the details were ridiculous, trained mercenaries are taken down by some guy from engineering, um no. the gymnastics needed to allow some people to have internet/cell access while others couldnt get reception or what not was just silly and the CEO of this big time aerospace company was a woman, um no.
the premise was a bit far fetched, there seems to be a deluge of books centering on some sort of central asian federation or alliance threatening europe, or china or the US., not gonna happen , this one was a ganghis kahn follower, the other was an alexander the great follower, the over all reading was ok but not great
i am a very experienced many year memeber of audible and i found this book very hard to follow, the author switched between first and last names, and had almost no character development in the beginning for the listener to use later as a basis for their relationships with each other, i often got lost and had to re listen
