"Terrible"
You will be depressed and let down by this book. All the tragedy leads to nothing. The only mystery here is that an editor put this out on the market!
The main character is tolerable. Maybe Grisham will write another Kyle McAvoy story and give him a little excitement.
"You will like it, but it's strange."
Strange and haunting
"Light, medieval history"
I disagree with the more negative review, but I understand exactly what the reviewer means. This book is a light medieval history and like many histories the information is cobbled together a bit. It does seems disjointed because the story rotates among the sisters, and it's not in a perfect chronology, though it is _generally_ chronological. It's a good book but it's a more challenging listen than something like a historical romance. Two-thirds in, I was a little tired of it. BUT, if you don't know anything about these sisters and like medieval history, you will find the book fascinating.
"Really good - well worth the listen"
Like Kaye, I liked the Lincoln Lawyer better and I liked the narrator better too. But this was still excellent! Well-paced and interesting throughout.
"Great book"
I tried and failed to get into an earlier Michael Connelly book but I was glad I gave this book a chance. It was great! Like the other reviewers, I didn't want to get out of my car once I got home. The narrator was good too -- I didn't think he was too fast.
"Impossible to listen to"
Like the other reviewers, I found this book hard to listen to. In fact, for me, it was impossible. Not only is the recording/narration very challenging, but there are quite a few key terms used by the author in the original Latin. Unless you have an excellent ear for Latin, you will prefer the print edition, where you can see the spelling and check your Latin dictionary. I did buy the print edition, and the book is excellent. It is well worth the time and cost, if you can overcome the issues with with audio.
"One L or heading to law school? get this book"
This book is a bit outdated--Turow was a One L in 1975--but his story expresses themes universal to the One L experience. If you are a One L or have been one, you will surely identify with Turow. If you are headed to law school, this makes good book to read before you go, to help you mentally prepare for the experience! In any case, Turow is a terrific writer and this is a good memoir--he admits to his downfalls and challenges in a way that makes him, and all the people at HLS with him, students and professors alike, sympathetic. You'll enjoy it.
"Reviews said this wasn't his best?"
Because this is the first Sedaris audiobook that I've listened to and it made me laugh so hard that I was a hazard on the highway. If this "wasn't the best" I can't wait to hear the others.
"Better than Diary"
And I didn't think I could like an audiobook better than Diary! What a terrific book--I wanted to pull the car over about 100 times to jot down some great line to remember. CP never disappoints!
"Courageous"
In contrast to some of the other reviewers, I really liked the language and style of this book. It was true to the spirit of its topic, and that delighted me. The book kept pace too, which makes for a good audiobook.
