I hate answering this way, and won't. It was one of the best books I have recently read. Great characters. Five stars all the way.
This book is like reading a newspaper, where 20 unbelievable things happen, and have them happen to one family. Car accident, husband killing his wife. Random sex with a stranger. You name if, it is here.
Somehow, you feel for the characters.
How anybody could kill such a beautiful book by having it read with almost impossible to understand narrators is absolutely impossible to fanthom. I finally bought the actual book, so I could understand the story, which is up to Khaled's usual standards. I have live in 7 countries, and never had any problem with language or accents, so don't think the problem lies with me. Looking at other comments, I see that I am not the only one.
Maybe having to buy two books is a good merchandising plot.
Completely and totally. Redo this book with only Khaled as narrator and I'll buy it again.
The story is terrific, if you READ it not LISTEN to it.
REDO THE AUDIO BOOK VERSION (caps intended)
Yes. The book describes the differences between the two cultures very well.
Easy to understand why it works and doesn't work.
If this friend was in a similar situation, I would recommend it.
Becoming famous does not hold the key to happiness.
I had to get used to the flat staccato of his voice, but then realized that not many other people could have been the voice of this book. The author himself HAD to narrate.
Yes, that could be true, because the narrator makes you feel like you are on the road with the main character
Development of the characters
I'll listen to the narrator, but I'll think twice about anything by the author
None. Everything was so superficial. The only character that was developed to a certain extent was Pasquale. His emotions seem real; the others I did not believe in for one second. I have been going to the coasts and lakes of Italy since 1957 and probably
expected too much. But any "Housewifes of..." has more character development than
Beautiful Ruins. I understand one can only describe the celebrities, because their personalities are too well known, but the remainder was abysmal.
Disappointment and anger at being hoodwinked into a tearjerker.
The above should be enough.
One of the more disappointing books I have listened to in a while. It starts out very promising, but never
develops. A cross between soft porn and Victorian novel. Really pretty awful.
