Professor of psychiatry Elyn R. Saks writes about her struggle with schizophrenia in this unflinching account of her mental illness. In The Center Cannot Hold, Saks draws readers into a nightmare world of medications, a misguided health-care system, and social stigmas. But she would not be defeated. With a strength and force of will that most can only imagine, Saks reclaimed her life and went on to achieve great success.

I thought the narration was great! She was narrating a schitzophrenic person - and i think it added to the book. The story was fascinating and I have listened to it more than once. I like her reasons for writing the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

By the time James Frey enters a drug and alcohol treatment facility, he has so thoroughly ravaged his body that the doctors are shocked he is still alive. Inside the clinic, he is surrounded by patients as troubled as he: a judge, a mobster, a former world-champion boxer, and a fragile former prostitute. To James, their friendship and advice seem stronger and truer than the clinic's droning dogma of How to Recover.

The people that are saying this is dull - I dont think fully grasp it. I have read the book, and I listened to it too.. and I loved it - both ways.
The way he writes is different, yes - but it's RAW - and powerful. It conveys his pain...to me anyway. It isn't normal, but it's very effective.

When I listened to it - the narrator does an AMAZING job of reading the book ... and he also conveys the pain...... portrays the agony of his life in the way he reads. It's a hard book to read, just because of the way it was written, and the narrator did it perfectly.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book - reading and listening.
