I wasn't sure what to expect, having already watched the rather cliche and collectivist-oriented movie of the same title based on this novel.

This book was great! The power of one... there is no collective in the boxing ring, only the individual. It shows everything that needs to be said about the evils of racial hatred and statism.

The sequel is definitely worth a read too. I'm still working my way through the rest of his books, but I've liked all of them so far.

The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

It's fascinating to read a classic like this. There are many themes and ideas in here that will resonate as familiar to the reader... and this story is the origin of some of them.

During his years in a neural-health facility, Pat Peoples has formulated a theory about silver linings. He believes that his life is a movie produced by God, that his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and that if he succeeds, his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki, and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.

I don't usually feel that way, but in this case, the subtle (and less-subtle) changes made to adapt the story to the movie were distracting, even if they were mostly for the best (for a movie).

As a native of the Delaware Valley, I did enjoy all of the Eagles references though. :)

The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. And then, in a moment of horror, the adventure turns into a struggle for survival as one man becomes a human hunter who is offered his own harrowing deliverance.

You probably know the story because you saw the movie, and the plots are fairly close. Still, I think that it is worth a read from the perspective of character development and clues about the characters and their motivations that I don't remember being obvious from the movie.

I miss the dueling banjos though. :)

Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, Neuromancer didn't just explode onto the science fiction scene - it permeated into the collective consciousness, culture, science, and technology.Today, there is only one science fiction masterpiece to thank for the term "cyberpunk," for easing the way into the information age and Internet society.

It's been more years than I care to remember since I first read this book. So, I was a bit nervous to get the audio version and give it another go. The story holds up very well though, and the few anachronisms lend character more than distract from the plot. At least, that is my opinion. The narrator's performance is very good.

This was a very enjoyable and well-written book. Personally I would recommend reading the book before seeing the movie, although the movie was a very faithful and interesting interpretation. I just wish that I had read the book first so that I had more understanding of the depth of the fictional universe.

Following the souls through time is a fascinating idea and I think it's very well-executed.

  • Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

John and Abigail Adams left an indelible and remarkably preserved portrait of their lives together in their personal correspondence: both Adamses were prolific letter writers (although John conceded that Abigail was clearly the more gifted of the two). Joseph J. Ellis distills this unprecedented and unsurpassed record to give us an account both intimate and panoramic; part biography, part political history, and part love story.
