Why we think it’s a great listen: You may have thought the movie was scary, but this is pure Stephen King as it was meant to be experience – performed frighteningly well by Campbell Scott. First published in 1977, The Shining quickly became a benchmark in the literary career of Stephen King. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, his loyal wife, and their uniquely gifted son slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the Overlook Hotel's past are revealed.

Put this on you list of essential audio books. It's a must have. With the possible exception of The Stand, this is the best that King has ever written. The perfect mix of creepy insanity and outright scarey. If you've never read/heard The Shining, you must do it. Be sure to do it with the lights on and the doors locked though. If you have read it before, take a listen anyway. You certainly won't be sorry.

I remember the first time I read this novel. It was the first time I was ever sacred while reading. It's one thing to watch a movie and be affraid, but it's an entirely different thing to have it happen while reading. Having someone read it to you just adds to the fright. I'm thrilled to see more of the classic King novels coming to audio, and becoming available at Audible.com. It's part of the reason I keep my subscription going.

And speaking of movies, while the original movie with Jack is among my favorites, you must check out the remake with Steven Weber and Rebecca DeMornay. Although this was made for USA Networks, it is a better movie in my opinion. Apparently King himself had a small hand in the making of this one, and it more closely resembles the novel. Just straight forward chills. I would have let this one go by if my teenage son hadn't convinced me to watch it.

Listen to the book, then watch the movie. The best of all possible worlds when looking for a good scare.
