As one of the most horrific crimes in modern history, these atrocities, the trial, and the subsequent conviction of Charles Manson and his followers caused a media sensation, spawning movies, documentaries, and best-selling books, including the classic Helter Skelter.

Although I knew the story it was so interesting to hear from the family. I was swept up in the emotions and memories. It brought it back and broke my heart for those that lived through it.

All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

    Story

I purchased the book because it was rated highly in entertainment weekly magazine. The story did bring to light some differant views on parenting but it feels like a work in progerss and not a true guide. The children raised by this method both seemed to benefit but initially reacted in oppisite ways. It is great for people who want a new perspective but not as an answer to what is the better way.

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book but since I love fantasy and fairy tales always intrigue me I thought I would take a change. I loved the way the author wove the stories I remembered from my childhood together to create an almost believeable historical figure. I loved the story and was sad when it ended. I look forward to more from this author. Will Wheaton does a fine job as the reader. His smooth delivery was satin to the ears.

When I started listening to this story I couldn't figure out where it was trying to take me. Was the characture lying or was there something I was missing?I got caught up in the story after the first couple of hours but when I got to the end I just didn't see the twist coming. I kind of felt cheated because there were no clues prior to the big reveal at the end.

An American epic of science, politics, race, honor, high society, and the Mississippi River, Rising Tide tells the riveting and nearly forgotten story of the greatest natural disaster this country has ever known, the Mississippi flood of 1927. The river inundated the homes of nearly one million people, helped elect Huey Long governor and made Herbert Hoover president, drove hundreds of thousands of blacks north, and transformed American society and politics forever.

This book was suggested by a friend who was reading the hard cover version. When I ordered it I didn't realize it was the abridged version. Actually, it was just long enough. I got all the great stories and history of how the Mississippi river changed New Orleans and it was not too long and drawn out. It gave me a wonderful understanding of the political machine that shaped New Orleans.
