"Kept Listening to See if it Got Better...It Didn't"
From Sylvia, yes. From Shana, NO.
After listening to Gone Girl I wanted to give Sylvia's other books a try. This one disappointed me. If you want a book that's solely about detailed "love" scenes then this is the book for you. There is no depth. The main characters are supposed to be madly in love with each other but why? Less sex, more background, more substance, anything.
Something narrated by Julia Whelan - the best narrator there is!
The narrator was completely the wrong choice. When she was being female it was monotone, when she was male with an accent (there were several) she was exactly the same voice and still monotone.
Example:
"You can't do that", he said viciously
Shana: "You can't do that" (monotone) he said viciously
There weren't many. Chad perhaps. He was pretty useless. Philip - where did he even come from?
"At least it has a great narrator"
Luke - yes
Sean - probably not
I don't think so
I love religious who dun its and dramas. I saw this book and that Luke narrated it and had really high hopes. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. I found myself day dreaming while listening and not even bothering to rewind. I was just biding my time until it was over and I could get something else. Way too much to wade through with too many characters to appreciate the ending. I won't even go into what I thought about the ending so that I dont spoil it for anyone. But I was disappointed.
"Fan Freaking Tastic!!!!"
Shocking
Fantastic
MORE (as in I want more)
I dont have one. Best book I've "read" in a long time.
There was one particular scene where I found myself saying outloud - YES GOOD FOR YOU AMY!
Definitely. Both of the narrators were amazing. Wonderful how it switched back and forth. More than one "shocker" in the book. Twists and turns in so many ways. Really makes you FEEL. I HOPE there is a sequel!
"Great Story for 3/4s of the book"
Yes - I t was really intriguing, a lot of clues and whodunits throughout the book. Kept me interested. However, it switched gears from plausible to complete fantasy very quickly. I wasn't expecting it and was a little disappointed.
Sure - but after the ending I would research them a bit more.
Loved how he was able to change his voice into each character. None of them sounded the same. The beginning was a little stiff and hurried but I think most books are until the narrator "gets into it".
"Couldn't Stop Listening ~ Sucked Me In!!!"
I really liked how the author told the story, alternating between 1985, 2010 and excerpts from the fictional book within the book about the case. Doing it this way not only added suspense to the story but wonderful background, clues and was a great way to tell us important info in a creative way. There are a lot of sub plots as well which were very entertaining. She also describes scenes in a way that is realistic and easy to visualize. Great story, great ending.
I actually bought this book BECAUSE Julia narrated it. I clicked on her name to see what else she has done after I heard her in Gone Girl. I think I'll keep selecting books this way. Not only did she go to college in my hometown (side note) :) but she has an amazing ability to capture any character with a different voice no matter if they are old, young, male or female. It's all believable. Her natural voice as a narrator is confident, has an excellent cadence and very easy to listen to. It never sounds like it's the first time she's reading the book (unlike other narrators).
YES! I listen to books in the car during my commute. With this book I found myself listening at home with headphones during any free moment!
"Couldn'tstop listening!"
I listened to all three books in the series in rapid succession. Normally I listen to books in the car but I listened to this while cooking, eating, etc.... I couldn't "put it down"!
The one thing I would change is the clipped reading from the narrator. She didn't seem like a 17 year old girl. She read like a much older, aristocratic woman.
"Absolutely AMAZING!"
I am normally a sci-fi/fantasy book reader. Not Stephen King, but more like The Hunger Games. I do NOT like history stories. BUT - this book has changed my reading life! It has just the right amount of love, fantasy, imagination and history. I was sad when it ended!
Craig Wasson is an amazing narrator. I now search for him when looking for my next book. He was meant for this! He makes the characters come alive in very special ways. His accents, man or woman are perfect. I wish this was a series that I could continue listening to forever!
