Liam Pennywell, who set out to be a philosopher and ended up teaching fifth grade, never much liked the job at that run-down private school, so early retirement doesnt bother him. But he is troubled by his inability to remember anything about the first night that he moved into his new, spare, and efficient condominium on the outskirts of Baltimore. All he knows when he wakes up the next day in the hospital is that his head is sore and bandaged.

I thought I'd try this based on reviews...but I could not stay with this thing. I didn't much care about the characters and it just seemed so pointless. Perhaps I'm just not deep enough to to "get" it; I tried to care about this character; spent three hours trying, but finally gave up. Fast forwarded to last chapter to see if I missed anything: nope.

When we last left the mighty wizard detective Harry Dresden, he wasn't doing well. In fact, he had been murdered by an unknown assassin. But being dead doesn't stop him when his friends are in danger. Except now he has nobody, and no magic to help him. And there are also several dark spirits roaming the Chicago shadows who owe Harry some payback of their own. To save his friends - and his own soul - Harry will have to pull off the ultimate trick without any magic....

Bill says: "Not the best audio book in the series"
    "Glover is fine!"
    Overall

Ok,ok, ok...yeah, I prefer Mr Marsters as well, but Mr Glover does just fine. I've always enjoyed his appearances in various tv shows; perhaps it helps my acceptance. I haven't listened to any Dresden books since Changes, over a year ago, that helps. (I enjoyed the TV show as well...so mavbe rabid fans are shaking heads about that too) I haven't finished yet, but wanted to offer my opinion about the STORY...its great!

A house demolition provides an unpleasant surprise for Minneapolis - the bodies of two girls, wrapped in plastic. It looks like they've been there a long time. Lucas Davenport knows exactly how long.In 1985, Davenport was a young cop with a reputation for recklessness, and the girls' disappearance was a big deal. His bosses ultimately declared the case closed, but he never agreed with that. Now that he has a chance to investigate it all over again, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: It wasn't just the bodies that were buried. It was the truth.

I confess to some trepidation when purchasing Sanford or some of my other usually reliable authors...some of these characters need to be retired. I divorced myself from from Lee Child after listening to the awful "61 Hours" and Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch is getting tedious also...these characters have achieved a certain level of competence over time. I get irritated as a result when I know something before the super-sleuth does. Continued listening expecting the books to surprise me because it can't be so simple...was disappointing. This book was refreshing in meshing the early Davenport with the experienced character we have come to know. We get to see things from the perpetrator's point of view and he's not brilliant, just lucky. I get a bit tired of the "super" criminal playing a "deadly cat and mouse game" with whatever new super detective in whatever new thriller.

Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unlikely partnership. In exchange for help finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner…are there actually good vampires?

Stephenie says: "Great series. Worth every credit."
    "Not impressed"

Too much romance novel...and the accent was, indeed, bad. Slogged through a couple hours of the thing and went to the end. Thought it would be more like the Kim Harrison novels, but it is soooooo....not.

Adam March is a self-made “Master of the Universe.” He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting—until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called.

Shelby says: "A cynic and a cynical dog - PERFECT!!"
    "Had me...then lost me!"
    Overall

This book made my list based on wonderful reviews; also because I've enjoyed the Chet and Bernie books. I know dog fighting exists and have owned bully breeds. I was completely engaged and understand the life lesson that was learned by the man in the story...but for cryin' out loud, I certainly didn't need that last bit. I was already on board with hating the people doing the dog fights early in the book...didn't need to be beat -over-the-head with it at the end. Oh well...I'm still angry with the ending of "Old Yeller"...so maybe I'm just too shallow and need that happy ending. I didn't finish the book; knew where it was going and was too invested in it to want to be there at the end.

The Dead Path tells the gripping story of a broken man, Nicholas Close. A terrible accident has left him a widower and awoken in him the ability to see the dead. Now, he can’t escape visions of tortured spirits, their last moments caught in horrible, endlessly replaying loops. Nicholas leaves London and returns to Australia, where he is disturbed to see that a heavily treed tract of land in his childhood suburb has somehow escaped development.

I took a chance based on other reviews. I found myself irritated with the characters and the story line...don't know what I was expecting. Maybe this genre just isn't for me...

    James Talkington says: "Good Listen"
    "predictable"
    Overall

I don't know...maybe I've read too many mysteries. Quit listening about halfway through and went to the end...just to see if I was right. Perhaps it was the narrator; she just didn't do it for me. Narrator is soooo important; I don't think this is the right person to make these characters come alive. Will Patton makes the James Lee Burke books really click...I choose to listen to those just because Patton is so phenomenal. This series could use a narrator like that.

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

If you've read a couple of these, then you know the formula. It is typical of the series; it's a fun diversion for light reading. Robb(erts) does a decent job of having the characters learn things about each other and change over the series.

In the northern California town of Coventry, two teenage brothers go into the woods one day, but only one comes back. No one knows what happened to the younger brother, Josh, until 20 years later, when the older brother, Oren, now an ex-investigator for the Army CID, returns to Coventry for the first time in many years. His first morning back, he hears a thump on the front porch. Lying in front of the door is a human jawbone, the teeth still intact. And it is not the first such object, his father tells him.

Paige says: "A good, solid listen"
    "not awful"
    Overall

Previous reviewers get it right; the narrarator could have been better and the story line is a stretch. I was doing garden work while listening; perhaps that's why the narration didn't bother me as much as it did others. This is also my first O'Connell book.

  • Swan Peak: A Dave Robicheaux Novel

Swan Peak finds Detective Robicheaux far from his New Iberia roots, attempting to relax in the untouched wilderness of rural Montana. He, his wife, and his buddy Clete Purcell have retreated to stay at an old friend's ranch, hoping to spend their days fishing and enjoying their distance from the harsh, gritty landscape of Louisiana post-Katrina.

    Deborah says: "Christmas/Birthday in July"
    "Couldn't put it down..."
    Overall

I have to give credit to the great Will Patton; his narration takes you into this book so completely...I think that's why I always get the audio of these books now. I do think at some point that the Clete character should learn something from the consequences of his behavior. Also, since these books take place in real time, these Vietnam vets are a bit old to get involved in so many physical altercations and recover so easily...but I can suspend disbelief.
