Obviously, lots of readers seemed to like this, but this book did nothing for me. After the intriguing first few chapters, it just spun further and further into fantasyland and seemed to go nowhere. The prose was colorful, but put to no purpose.
I am going to think long and hard before diving into a book that deals with fantasy or children's fears.
The prose in this novel is very poetic, and read beautifully. However, the characters are a miserable bunch, and the story is not in the least believable. This is not a pleasant book, which would be fine, if there were a purpose to it. But, I cannot understand why the author would want to put his clearly excellent writing skills to create this unpleasant, far-fetched world. I cannot recommend this novel, disappointing.
I am puzzled by the fact that most readers have given this book 5 stars. I have listened to perhaps 20 audiobooks in the past couple years, and this is the first one that I really am struggling to finish. I expected the book to be hilarious, and, having gone through now 4/5 of the book, I have only laughed a few times. I agree with the reviewer who noted that much of the humor is woman-centric, so perhaps it would be a much more engaging read for a woman. It feels like a lazy book to me, like Tina Fey just whipped it out, without putting out the effort to say more interesting and witty things.
