Ilustrado opens with Crispin Salvador, lion of Philippine letters, dead in the Hudson River. His young acolyte, Miguel, sets out to investigate the author's suspicious death and the strange disappearance of an unfinished manuscript---a work that had been planned not just to return the once-great author to fame but to expose the corruption behind the rich families who have ruled the Philippines for generations.

My mind kept wandering off as I listened to the boring storyline that took forever to get off the ground. And the narrator - horrible! He over-enunciates words and speaks with a nasally voice that is very irritating and distracting. Don't waste your time (or your credits) on this flop.

The summer that Nixon resigns, six teenagers at a summer camp for the arts become inseparable. Decades later the bond remains powerful, but so much else has changed. In The Interestings, Wolitzer follows these characters from the height of youth through middle age, as their talents, fortunes, and degrees of satisfaction diverge. The kind of creativity that is rewarded at age 15 is not always enough to propel someone through life at age 30; not everyone can sustain, in adulthood, what seemed so special in adolescence.

The Interestings is a wonderful book. I fell in love with the characters and miss them terribly now that I have finished the story. I found myself constantly checking my chapter number, fearful of how close to the end I was getting. You meet a set of 5 teenagers the day they all meet at a summer camp and follow their lives all the way into adulthood. They are good but flawed people - just like most people in the real world.

My only complaint is the narrator. I have listened to hundreds of audio books, and this is the first one for which I had to slow down the narration speed in order to keep up. Even at a slower speed, the voices aren't distorted and I wasn't at all distracted by the pace. Do buy this book. It's absolutely enchanting.

It's 1988 and Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley have only just met. They both know that the next day, after college graduation, they must go their separate ways. But after only one day together, they cannot stop thinking about one another. As the years go by, Dex and Em begin to lead separate lives. And yet, unable to let go of that special something that grabbed onto them that first night, an extraordinary relationship develops between the two.

Kathy says: "Great book, bad ending"
"Perfect book for those who believe in soul mates"
    Overall

Buy this book right now. You will love it I'm certain. I quickly became attached to the characters and the connection that kept bringing them back together over 20 years, a love that only happens when people are made for each other - soul mates. I will keep them with me long after I've forgotten the details of the story. Dex and Em. Em and Dex.
