I really enjoyed this book and was sorry when it ended, even though it was one of the longest audiobooks I'd ever heard. I didn't feel any of the story dragged, and really cared about each of her characters. Women and men were represented in a balanced, three-dimentional way. The narrator was a very good choice and gave distinct voices to each of the characters. I think the end could have been better, but that's my only criticism -- and it still gets 5 stars from me.
I am quoting from a review on Amazon that says it better than I ever could (and that I wish I'd read before my purchase):
"The fact is, I found myself hating this man, even as I grew fond of his dog. Jackson Hole is rife with his type of arrogant, he-man, gotta-eat-wild-animals, gun loving, opinionated jerks. He even goes so far as to say that vegans are responsible for the destruction of animals and insects because farming supplants wildlife habitat. Yet it's somehow okay for him to go out and blast away at elk, antelope, deer, various birds, and God knows what else. He is downright irresponsible with his wonderful dog. As for the idiotic idea that dogs should run free, I live in a rural area where people let their dogs do just that, and people do get bitten, and dogs do attack other dogs and livestock, and they do get hit by cars and shot by people who have had it with dog owners just like Kerasote."
This book was perfection. Filled with lots of fascinating history, intrigue, suspense, great characters with real relationships and an ending I couldn't improve if I tried. And I'm critical of most endings.
This book will leave you wanting to learn more about the Hypnerotomachia, the Renaissance, classical literature and even Princeton University.
I can't wait to see what these two authors write next!
It's not often you find a book that has an excellent plot AND reads like poetry. I thought every sentence from this book was worth treasuring and pausing over, but I was so interested in seeing what was going to happen, that I rushed through it. Fortunately, I'll enjoy listening to it a second time just as much.
I loved all the well-developed characters, and it was so refreshing to read a book with such a unique premise.
This book had the effect of making me want to appreciate to the fullest every day of the rest of my life.
I loved this book! It was thrilling and I listened to it straight through the first time. A fun, light read. I think the criticisms here have been way too harsh. I've got a B.S. in Computer Science, but I knew this book was FICTION so I didn't expect reality. (For really good non-fiction on AI, read "On Intelligence".)
I thought the writing was perfectly acceptable, the plot really clever, and the characters very well developed. I thought Liza's character was quite touching and I thought the ending was perfect -- although few seem to agree with me on that. I can't think of any other ending I would prefer.
Someone said this was like a cross between "2001" and "War Games". I would agree with that and point out that those were both really fun thrillers as well. Get it and suspend disbelief. You'll enjoy it a lot that way.
This is hands down the best book I've ever read (or listened to) and I agree with a previous reviewer that the book stayed with me for weeks and weeks afterward. I loved the two main characters and I wanted my relationship with them to go on and on forever. I've recommended this book to everyone I know and they've all loved it too. Definitely read it -- you won't regret it.
I'm truly amazed by the negative reviews of this book and wonder if we're even talking about the same book! I guess that's what makes horse races.
I enjoyed every minute of this book! The narrator does a great Greek accent and the author has created a book that is funny, fascinating, moving . . . I never wanted this book to end! I'm going to read his other books and wait for any future books from him. Enjoy!
