I also read the abridged version first; very much enjoyed it, and enjoyed the unabridged version even more. From the beginnings of the universe, to the beginning of life, Bryson has surveyed the history of discovery and the current state of affairs; advising readers of what we know, what we think we know, and what we have no idea about. As a liberal arts major who dropped out of my first (and only) college physics class over 30 years ago, I found the information fascinating and the listen very enjoyable. It is done in chatty stories about not just the science, but the scientists. Who knew, for example, that Newton was apparently mad?
And, it is not just for adults. My 13 year old son, who just started 7th grade, is also listening to the book, and he very much likes it -- my only concern is that he will know more than his teachers by the end of it; and somehow get into trouble. Oh well.
The narrator is very good. Slight British accent is perfect, as the text has a few "Bristish-isms" which makes the whole more charming. While I can't say I listened to the whole 18 hours in one sitting, I can say I did look forward to my next listen. Truly a fascinating and accessible survey of scientific history. Great read.
Not one of Grisham's best; but for the ending, might have been a romance book. . . . heroine gets laid off from fancy pants new york firm goes to Appalachia, describes abhorrent conditions, finds the joys of working for real people.
If you are at all a fan of the movie, and want some insights into the making of the movie, you need this book. Cary Elwes does an excellent job reading it; his stories are both funny and touching, like the book itself. A gem. I listen to many books. This one was special.
I enjoyed the book. There was enough history of mapmaking to put the story in context. Indeed, the short history was probably the best part of the book. One gets some insight into the main character, and there are also interesting details regarding those in the business and the libraries which were victims of the crimes. I only wish there had been some illustrations or photos included.
This collection of stories was great. I really enjoyed the historical stories, as well as the more current ones. The writing was excellent; and unusually, the author was a good narrator. If you are looking for something different, try this out. The story on Geeshie Wiley was the best thing I have read all year.
In this book, hero wakes up in unknown place and tries to get back home. He is chased by all sorts of bad guys. Then he finds out "the truth". Just wasn't for me. I thought it might be like Shutter Island, which I enjoyed.
great story, great narration, did not want to put it down! There are two intertwining stories, nicely done; Rudnicki is wonderful as always. I have only read a few Orson Scott Card books, but will definitely look for more.
The writing is awful; the narration is like listening to a poor reader being forced to read aloud at school; don't bother.
I very much enjoyed this book. Billy Crystal reads the book, and it is like an 8 hour performance from him. In fact, several chapters were recorded live as performances. Billy Crystal goes through his life and his loves with his unique perspective with warmth, wit and love. You'll laugh, you'll cry . . .oy vey, what else do you want?
A wonderful fairy tale, full of adventures and a drop of regret, we all have oceans within us. I won't go into the story, but Gaiman has created a world I was sorry to have to leave at the end of the book; and isn't that why we read, anyway?
Kevin does a great job on telling some of his stories from his career. and it is really quite amazing how he has accomplished all that he has; from lip syncing to Bill Cosby to his Columbo impression, and off he goes. His stories are funny and sweet, and he only tells stories about those he really respects (mostly) and it shows. It was a wonderful book and I did not want to put it down -- and was sad to reach the end. If you enjoy celebrity name dropping books and stories about stars, you will enjoy this book.
