Professor of psychiatry Elyn R. Saks writes about her struggle with schizophrenia in this unflinching account of her mental illness. In The Center Cannot Hold, Saks draws readers into a nightmare world of medications, a misguided health-care system, and social stigmas. But she would not be defeated. With a strength and force of will that most can only imagine, Saks reclaimed her life and went on to achieve great success.

The author is a brilliant scholar who has schizophrenia. This account of her life gives an appreciation of how difficult it is to live with this illness, yet also an understanding that it is a mistake to underestimate what a person with this illness might accomplish. Also, I was left thinking that doctors do not always know what is best. Or even moderately good. I was unaware of the huge differences in the treatment of the mentally ill between Britain and the United States. The use of force and involuntary treatment are much more common in the US. Thank you Elyn for fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves, and for sharing your story with us!

Oaths sworn . . . loyalties tested . . . forces collide. Following the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors on the Burning Plains, Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have narrowly escaped with their lives. Still there is more at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself bound by a tangle of promises he may not be able to keep.

    Story

I read the first two books in this series, and as delightful an experience as that was, this is even better. Gerard Doyle expresses the characters so well! At first I found the voice of Saphira, the dragon, disconcerting, but I got used to it quickly. After all, how is a dragon supposed to sound?

I know it is heresy to say this is better than The Lord of the Rings, but I think it is. This world has women in it, for a start. Also, there is no "race" of creatures who are demonized as irredeemably sub-human. And I love the character Lady Nasuada, a young woman of colour who ably and courageously uses statecraft to lead the multi-racial rebel forces against the tyranny of Galbatorix.

My adult son added that he enjoys the detailed explanations of how magic works.

So, if you haven't read the first two books, start at the beginning with Eragon. You won't be disappointed. Gerard Doyle narrates the whole series.

    Who we are:

    - A white woman in my 50s who read The Lord of the Rings out loud to my sons when they were young. (Yes, all three books. No, I am not exaggerating or lying. I love literature and it was a special feeling to share this with them. Plus, one of them had difficulty reading.)

    - A white male in his 20s who is a big Star Wars fan and loves gaming.

Hypnosis works for me. If you are ready to commit to weight loss, this recording will synchronize your conscious and unconscious intentions.

When I was doing the hypnosis every day, I was 100 per cent on track. I was eating healthy foods in appropriate quantities and losing weight. It worked so well, the whole family could eat ice cream and potato chips in front of me and I wasn't even tempted. (Yes, it's true, I am not lying to myself about this.).

Also, hypnosis is a very relaxing and de-stressing experience, which is good in and of itself.

Excellent. I am so glad I found this.
