As a police launch speeds across Miami's Biscayne Bay - with officer Nestor Camacho on board - Tom Wolfe is off and running. Here is a big, panoramic story of the new America, as told by our master chronicler of the way we live now. Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous best-selling novels, Back to Blood is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times.

Where does Back to Blood rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have listened to 3 Tom Wolfe Audiobooks and they ALL rank among my top favorite listens! Well worth the credits!

What does Lou Diamond Phillips bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

LDP's narration was magnificent! I thought that maybe there was more than one narrator, but it was just him. I am definitely about to search through all the titles that he narrates and see if I can find something else great to listen to.

The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer's career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track - until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the "lucky" associates. She's offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she'd get her old job back. In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about.

I have spent MANY credits on John Grisham books, and this is the only time I have regretted it. First of all, the narrator's voice is so SLOW and BORING I listened to the first 2 hours at a higher speed on my Kindle. I THOUGHT that once the story got going I could slow it back down to normal speed and just enjoy the listen. I was so wrong. I am not sure if it's the narrator or the story, but this book sounds like half of those stupid half-hearted romance/drama novels. Her voice is just horrible...point blank. But the story seems like a drag too. I just don't get the same feeling as I do with every other Grisham novel I have in my library. I am trying to get through it because I am a loyal Grisham fan, but I am at the 5th hour and I think I am just going to quit before I throw my Kindle against the wall for some excitement..

Eva never really wanted to be a mother - and certainly not the mother of a boy who ends up murdering seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much-adored teacher who tried to befriend him, all two days before his 16th birthday. Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with marriage, career, family, parenthood, and Kevin’s horrific rampage, in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin.

Great book if you like to work (I am a bookkeeper) at your desk on monotonous tasks while listening to an audiobook. It's not the type of story that will make you forget you are working. It is an easy listen and a very interesting story. It's like listening to someone spill their guts about every detail of their life for hours while you just work away. But I promise you won't be bored!!! The narrator was perfect (for this particular type of book). Personally, I am glad I took a chance on it.
