There are two sides to any quarrel... unless there are more. Queen Elizabeth of Manticore's first cousin and Honor Harrington's best friend Michelle Henke has just handed the "invincible" Solarian League Navy the most humiliating, one-sided defeat in its entire almost thousand-year history in defense of the people of the Star Empire's Talbott Quadrant. But the League is the most powerful star nation in the history of humanity. Its navy is going to be back – and this time with thousands of superdreadnoughts.

Would you try another book from David Weber and/or Allyson Johnson?

    Maybe

What could David Weber have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not copied and pasted from previous books.

    Any additional comments?

It's a "Honor Harrington novel" - it says so right on the cover picture, trouble is, she's not in it as an active character and is just mentioned in passing once or twice....I gave it an overall rating of two stars because it held enough of my attention to actually finish it.

Of all the universe's forces, the most mysterious, confounding, and humbling is the power of love. Alma Katsu's acclaimed trilogy - a supernatural epic that began with The Taker and sparked a chase around the world in The Reckoning - comes to a stunning conclusion, and brings Lanore McIlvrae to a final encounter with Adair, her powerful nemesis. Dismayed by Adair's otherworldly powers and afraid of his passionate temper, Lanore has run from him across time, even imprisoning him behind a wall for two centuries to save Jonathan, her eternal love.

Has The Descent turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

This felt as if the author had to write a minimum of x words, so she threw in a bunch of not very related scenes to pad it out. The whole thing fell very flat for me, especially after the first two excellent books.

Would you listen to House Name again? Why?

    Yes

What other book might you compare House Name to and why?

Anything by Michelle Sagara/West - you don't need a computer to run a concordance to recognize the word use or style:-)

What does Eva Wilhelm bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

In my copy (the enhanced version) about 32 minutes from the end she stops halfway through a sentence and says something that sound suspiciously like f*ck and then restarts the sentence - I doubt that's in the printed copy of the book!

    Any additional comments?

One more file editing error - the enhanced version comes as a single file, yet halfway or perhaps 2/3 through the file there's the tag the comes at the end of an intermediate part ("You've reached the end of a part, but not the end of the book.....") Someone was asleep at the editing desk...

Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches' cliff-hanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew's old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens. Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries.

What did you love best about Shadow of Night?

Can't choose - it was all good

    Any additional comments?

It's a great story though there are occasional failures of internal logical consistency which I wont boor you with since this is a fantasy after all!

The audio editing leaves something to be desired (at least on my iPod), with occasional gaps - it sounds as if an error was made in the middle of a sentence, the error removed and then a correction spliced in with too much silence at the beginning. It's not a huge problem but it niggles. Occasionally, the pronunciation is a bit off, cataclysmic and [Hieronymus] Bosch come to mind.
