  • Mao: The Unknown Story

Based on a decade of research, and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before - and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him - this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, and showing a completely unknown Mao.

"Some good parts, and some really long ones"
    Overall

I have only made it through half of this book (my second on Audible). I think you would have to have a keen interest in politics and chineese history to really appreciate all of it. I liked the parts about Mao as a person, but less so in regards to the more historical parts.
I'm not sure I will ever make it through the whole book...

In June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in Afghanistan for the Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. Less then 24 hours later, only one of those SEALs remained alive. This is the story of how team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle that led to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history.

    "Great, but quite "US patriotic""
    Overall

I'm not a book-worm by any means. I sometimes read a little fiction to relax and send my mind to another place. This means that I won't comment on the language of the book. I'm simply "not qualified". However, I can comment on how well narrated it is, and how thrilling the story is.

I finished this book in one sitting. The first half hour was so-so. Mainly because it was mostly about glorifying the US military, patriotism etc. I'm from Europe, so I don't really buy into that, but it wasn't too distracting. But when the story takes off, it is really a good adventure! The balance between describing the current state of the main character, and his history which brought him there, was very well done. The narration is also very captivating! I'll be finding more books narrated by Kevin Collins!

All in all, this is a book I can highly recommend. Especially if you like US patriotism (whether you are a patriot, or just like the fact that patriots exist, or something else entirely..). The story is thrilling, and the characters are captivating!
