Burke's writing is lovely (as always), the story is complex and interesting, the characters are compelling, and Will Patton brings the story to life. This one is very dark, but not heavy handed. I have come to adore these characters--even the bad guys. As most Audible listeners will agree, the narrator can make or break a novel. Will Patton is among the very best narrators. I think the guy could make the classified section of a small town newspaper hard to turn off! Combine him with a novelist like Burke and you've got a winner. If only EVERY audio book could be this good! I'm tempted to postpone using my next credit in favor of listening to this book again. Get it! You'll be glad you did!

I'm hooked. A friend who never steers me wrong on books and movies recommended John Sanford, so I started with the Virgil Flowers series. This is the third one I've purchased. With each one, as soon as it ends I start it over and listen again immediately. I'm going to start #4 in a few minutes, but wanted to take time to recommend this series. It's good fun, well written, and well read. Enjoy!

Probably not Cheryl Strayed, but Bernadette Dunne did as good a job as a narrator could with the material.

Mostly, I was happy when it ended. The author did not inspire empathy. Although the descriptions of the trail and her journey were at times interesting, her utter unpreparedness for the trail came across as ridiculous. She struck me as a somewhat shallow person, and not particularly bright. Her expression of grief at the loss of her mother was touching, but if that grief supposedly inspired the journey and triggered some of her uninhibited behavior prior, it was unconvincing.

The narrator was very good. Overall, for me this one will be forgotten entirely.

I loved her before this book and I love her even more now! This book was time well spent, and I look forward to listening again.

As other reviewers have commented, this is a tough story, but it's well worth the time. For me, narration makes or breaks an audio book, and I adore these readers. I'm pleased to have this one in my audio collection.

I have three wishes: an unabridged version; a "chapter" break between poems [I listen with iTunes on my computer, and if I want to hear a poem over, it is difficult to navigate to the right spot]; and the title/poet named before each and every poem.

Very pleasant listen!! Highly recommended.

I have listened to this several times and each time I enjoyed it more. There is "just enough" biographical information about each poet as well as suggestions for additional reading. All of the narrators are terrific. If you are new to poetry or a poetry lover, you'll enjoy this one. Highly recommended.

This is the story of the plucky but wise country girl who always lands on top and outsmarts every adversary, every time.

Every. Single. Time.

There is absolutely no drama. None. To make this even more boring, the author is a dreadful narrator whose voice rises with every sentence and falls at every hard stop. When she called her "no good worthless first husband" a "crumb-bum" for something like the one-dozenth time, I turned it off.

I couldn't finish it.

This is a very engaging and entertaining story. I was sad when it was finished! This is an example of audio books at their best. I highly recommend this one.
