"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork - all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's 20 years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.

What made the experience of listening to Radical Acceptance the most enjoyable?

Tara Brach was confirming concepts I've been reading about: Ekhardt Tolle, Byron Katie, ACIM. When the student is ready the teacher appears. And wow...thank you Tara!

What did you like best about this story?

I can listen to it again and again and get something out of it each time.

Which character – as performed by Cassandra Campbell – was your favorite?

Cassandra Campbell is my favorite narrator ironically. She was one of the narrators in The Help. This was a great combo for me: fav narrator and fav subject matter.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

All the great and different stories that explain things in a way that resonates. And disrupting our habitual behaviors in order to accept in the moment...try it!

    Any additional comments?

I first heard of Tara Brach on Hay House Radio in 2007 and I had only heard a meditation by her but I loved it. So I was going in sorta blind on this book and I was so thrilled she was talking about exactly what I was studying. I've read Jack Kornfield, Mark Epstein, Pema Chodron and Ram Dass...Tara is right up there with the master teachers.

Upon its first publication, this path breaking book launched an explosion of interest in how Eastern spirituality can enhance Western psychology. Since then, the worlds of Buddhism and psychotherapy have been forged into a revolutionary new understanding of what constitutes a healthy emotional life. In his insightful introduction, Mark Epstein reflects on this revolution and considers how it is likely to evolve in the future.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes definitely! Mark Epstein was one of the first buddhism teachers I discovered and his psychology background intrigued me when I was a young college student. The first book I read was Going on Being, and since then I've learned so much about meditation and buddhism and I reread that book recently and realized how he was the first one I read that started me on this path. I am continuing my path with all of his books on audio now. This one, Thoughts without a thinker, is my favorite!

What other book might you compare Thoughts Without a Thinker to and why?

    It's a stand alone book.

What about Mark Epstein’s performance did you like?

That he reads it, that he makes it feel like you are there talking with him.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! And I have more than once.

This is a book about men. Not all men, just emotionally unhealthy men. The ones who make you question, "Is it him or is it me? Am I making too big a deal out of this? I try to tell him how I feel, but he says I'm overreacting or needy or it's all my fault". Relationships are hard work, but how hard should they be? When do you know you are struggling too hard to make a relationship succeed?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! And I don't recommend just any book. If you are wondering if the man in your life is someone you can work a deal with or not this book will help. It puts things in perspective and not only points out flaws with certain men it also asks you to look at yourself plus she gives incredible examples!!
