Originally drawn to the game by his father, Carl Hiaasen wisely quit golfing in 1973. But some ambitions refuse to die, and as the years - and memories of shanked 7-irons - faded, it dawned on Carl that there might be one thing in life he could do better in middle age than he could as a youth. So gradually he ventured back to the dreaded driving range, this time as the father of a five-year-old son -and also as a grandfather.

What did you like best about The Downhill Lie? What did you like least?

The book was entertaining, and the reading passably good. However, I rather expected the strange and tangential humor of the typical Hiaasen book, and it simply was not present. A good read for a golfer, but not for the mystery buff.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Rhys Bowen

What does Carl Hiaasen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    an insider's view of golf

Did The Downhill Lie inspire you to do anything?

    not really

As police chief of Maggody, a sleepy Arkansas town, Arly Hanks lives a pretty quiet life. Her tranquility is shattered, however, when a movie crew moves in to film a Civil War documentary. Soon, Arly is dealing with rumors of lost Confederate gold, rabid Civil War reenactors, and some very suspicious deaths.

Would you consider the audio edition of Muletrain to Maggody to be better than the print version?

    I find them comparable

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was one of the funniest mysteries I have listened to in a long time

    Which scene was your favorite?

The acting was so good, and the writing so complete that scene after hilarious scene made itself vivdly present. It is too difficult to tell which was the best.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed, and laughed, and laughed

    Any additional comments?

This was my first experience with the author and narrator team. After listening, I can say that I am a confirmed fan of Joan Hess and C J Critt

Maggody, Arkansas (pop. 755) is regarded by most as a two-bit hick town, filled with one-bit hicks. But Mrs. Jim Bob Buchanon seeks to change that with her latest scheme - a charity golf tournament! This presents a bit of a challenge, since no one in Maggody plays golf and there is no course. But when the prize for the first hole-in-one is announced - a top of the line bass boat - nearly everyone in town quickly develops a profound interest in the sport...including a killer.

    I liked both

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

It was full of twists and turns that kept me guessing, but the plot was also consistent with foreshadowing and clues supplied all along, so that it did not result in one of those irritating

Have you listened to any of C. J. Critt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is one of her best performances.

    Any additional comments?

Have you listened to any of C. J. Critt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. It was a little difficult to realize that the murder victim was a youngster, but as her character developed later in the book, it made it more palatable. As for the performer, she is excellent. She has her characters well developed, although Ruby B seems to have more of a Bronx accent than your local Arkansas dialect. Overall

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to these as I commute, so this would not be possible, but I certainly looked forward to each new listen.

What did you like best about this story?

The character development is excellent. The story is cute, not overly full of violence, but has surprising twists and turns that make it an entertaining listen.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

Her command of the characters, both in voice and personality, was excellent. Reading aloud is an art as well as a skill, and she delivers believable, entertaining characters who move the story along nicely.
