The power and the beauty of The Iliad resound again across 2,700 years in Stephen Mitchell's exciting new translation, as if the lifeblood of its heroes Achilles and Patroclus, Hector and Priam flowed in every word. And we are there with them amid the horror and ecstasy of war, carried along by a poetry that lifts even the most devastating human events into the realm of the beautiful.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Read the story and leave out the commentary. There seemed to be more comment than story

What could Homer and Stephen Mitchell (translator) have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Just translate the story

How could the performance have been better?

    It was slow and monotone

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Thank goodness I could return this to get something better c

Centuries in the past, mankind fought a seemingly unbeatable adversary from sector to sector across the Spiral Arm until the war ground to a standstill and the Enemy withdrew. Believing that they had won, the citizens of the galaxy rebuilt. The Inner Worlds, which had escaped the worst of the war's ravages, became even more insular, while the Rim worlds adopted a free and easy way with law and order. Now, hundreds of years after their withdrawal, the Enemy is back - and this time they'll be satisfied with nothing less than the extinction of the galaxy.

Shawn says: "A good introduction to Lianden"

What other book might you compare Crystal Soldier to and why?

As far as styles I'd say this book is along the same lines as B.V. Larsons Swarm series. Lots of high tech yet well developed characters.

What does Kevin T. Collins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kevin does a great job with the various voices and is so consistant it helps to keep the mental image in sync with the story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It would have to be from an old song by REM. "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine"

    Any additional comments?

I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series and parralel series.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recomend this book to a friend. In fact I did by posting it to FB. Sharon Shinn is a very good writer and she easily keeps you interested in the story and it's characters.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that the story isn't some pulp fantasy following a typical storyline and it doesn't rely on conflict of good and evil. Each of the charaters either likable or not is someone most anyone would meet in their life.

What about Jennifer Van Dyck’s performance did you like?

Jennifer has a great deal of flexibility in her voice in producing all the unique character traits needed to make this story come to life. It was a joy to listen to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Really? you want me to do a spoiler? I don't think so. You'll just have to listen for yourself

    Any additional comments?

I look forward to listening to the next book in the series and I will add Sharon Shinn to my list of must read authors.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

What made the experience of listening to The Way of Kings the most enjoyable?

I was drawn into the story right from the start. Even having read the book and knowing just how long it is I couldn't wait to listen to it. Sanderson is by far the greatest Fantasy writer of his generation. I put him up there with Frank Herbert & Orson Scott Card.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Way of Kings?

I could not pick just one memorable moment, that's how good this book is.

What about Kate Reading and Michael Kramer ’s performance did you like?

The reading was great! Each character had it's own voice and I just couldn't imagine them sounding any other way.

    Any additional comments?

I've read and listened to the first and second book in this series and can't wait till the final book comes out.

Jane Carver is nobody's idea of a space princess. A hard-ridin', hard-lovin' biker chick and ex-Airborne Ranger, Jane is as surprised as anyone else when, on the run from the law, she ducks into the wrong cave at the wrong time - and wakes up butt-naked on an exotic alien planet light-years away from everything she's ever known. Waar is a savage world of four-armed tiger-men, sky-pirates, slaves, gladiators, and purple-skinned warriors in thrall to a bloodthirsty code of honor and chivalry.

    Any additional comments?

Seems like there are way too many parallels to John Carter of Mars. Similar name. Flip the first letter from M to W. Able to make incredible leaps. Similar humans just different color. Defeats an alien species in hand to hand combat and rescues a princess. Oh and only significant technology is in flight.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Would you be willing to try another book from John Scalzi? Why or why not?

yes, I've enjoyed many of his books

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

Begining of the book had a lot of short line dialog that became dificult to listen to with all the "He said"s thrown in. The story was a little lacking and it seemed like the last part was tacked on just to make the book long enough. Not Scalzi's best...
