Laura Patterson is an American exchange student in Rome who, fed up with being inexpertly groped by her young Italian beaus, decides there's only one sure-fire way to find a sensual man: date a chef. Then she meets Tomasso, who's handsome, young, and cooks in the exclusive Templi restaurant. Perfect. Except, unbeknownst to Laura, Tomasso is in fact only a waiter at Templi; it's his shy friend Bruno who is the chef.

Rebecca says: "A wandering, lackluster effort at best"
    "LOVED IT!!!"
    Overall

Great, breezy story. easy to listen to. Loved the Italian and the cooking terms too :)

When Mark Doty went looking to adopt a small dog, a cuddly creature who might comfort his terminally ill partner, Wally Roberts, he was surprised to find himself returning home from an animal shelter with a full-grown golden retriever, a dog whose "absolute openess of regard", and paw gently offered through the bars of a cage, proved irresistable to him.

    "awful"
    Overall

What a terrible book. I couldn't eve finish it!

In this captivating memoir, the man whom Julia Child has called "the best chef in America" tells the story of his rise from a frightened apprentice in an exacting Old World kitchen to an Emmy Award-winning superstar who taught millions of Americans how to cook and shaped the nation's tastes in the bargain.

Linda Zimmerman says: "WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RECIPES???"
    "Loved it!"
    Overall

I will forever be a fan of Jacques Pepin after reading this book. The man has lived an amazing life and tells his stories with humor and sincerity.
The narrator does a wonderful job as well!

This memoir is laced with wonderful stories about the French character, particularly in the world of food, and the way of life that Julia Child embraced so wholeheartedly. Above all, she reveals the kind of spirit and determination, the sheer love of cooking, and the drive to share that with her fellow Americans that made her the extraordinary success she became.

    Nathan says: "To be admired"
    "Beautiful!"
    Overall

The story captures the life of Julia Child extraordinary! I loved every minute and found myself upset when it all ended.

I opted for the abridged version because I felt the full version would be a little boring. If I could do it over again, I'd go for the unabridged!

  • The Making of a Chef: Mastering Heat at the Culinary Institute of America

    Story

Ruhlman propels himself and his readers through a score of kitchens and classrooms, from Asian and American regional cuisines to lunch cookery and even table waiting, in search of the elusive, unnamable elements of great cooking.

Justin says: "Interesting subject, terrible presentation."
    "Just okay..."
    Overall

This book could have been even better had the author cut half of it out. The book seems solely made for individuals in the restaurant biz, which I am. But I found it a little too textbook at times.

The narrator is not as terrible as others have mentioned. He is dry and offers no different character voices, but he reads it well.

With the humor of Bridget Jones and the vitality of Augusten Burroughs, Julie Powell recounts how she conquered every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking and saved her soul.

    Elizabeth says: "A good laugh"
    "Loved it!"
    Overall

After now listening to the audio book and seeing the movie, I am absolutely captivated with the life of Julia Child. While Julie & Julia focuses more on Julie, I believe the author does a great job expressing her affection of Mrs. Child.

I love that Julie Powell narrated the story as well. She does a great job!

A handsome 30-year-old gay Brit returns from over 10 years in the US, where he became an award-winning fashion designer with a top fashion house. Scott Farrell has left behind his lover, a famous porn star, to spend Christmas with his lesbian friends in dear old Plymouth, a place that will never, ever, be the same!

weak story and terrible narration. the man can't even read!

If I am going to listen to a book about a bunch of gay guys, why add a lesbian sex scene?

    not good.
