Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

What did you like best about Among Others? What did you like least?

The reader is fabulous, and probably the reason I persevered with the story. The story is full of onerous details like what someone is wearing, expressions on faces, the weather, which slow everything down. The reader is hoping for a big finish to reward the slow going. But the end of this story is a bit of a fizzer.

Would you recommend Among Others to your friends? Why or why not?

Not really. There are plenty of better reads than this I can recommend.

What about Katherine Kellgren???s performance did you like?

    Fabulous

Did Among Others inspire you to do anything?

Wish I hadn't bought more Jo Walton books

  • The Company: A Novel of the CIA

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says (Publishers Weekly).

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely I recommend this to anyone interested in a great story which has adventure, intrigue, politics, history, and plenty of well-researched spy-craft. But the book also has that rare quality of giving you more just when you think it is going to end. So the book is like 2 or 3 or 4 books in one, each one more compelling than the last because you are more emotionally involved in the characters as you know them better. I loved it from the late 1940's (where it begins) to the arrival of Putin (where it ends). The reader is, Scott Brick, is brilliant. Read/listen to it!

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott Brick reads and enacts the book in a way that lifts it from being a great story to being an even better performance and listening experience.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes but I didnt want it to end.
