"Great beach read"
I will try one more.
I love well written sagas that cross generations. The characters were interesting, the story well developed and the plot was non formulaic.
Absolutely worth the listening time.
"fun read, good story"
well constructed story, mediocre prose, decent characters good story
The plot twists were ingenious, female characters were well written.
Male characters were weak and the male romantic interest was thinly fleshed out.
It was a wonderful, non demanding listen.
"Best Book of 2011"
I have already listened a second time because the story was so engrossing that i missed some of the excellent prose. I also will read a third time so I can re savor the experience of exploring the Amazon.
Marina Singh's character was complex, damaged and beautifully developed. We come to know her though contrasting her interactions with peers, teachers, mentors and family which are nuanced and detailed.
Hope Davis's performance was soft and unobtrusive. It added little but more important to me,
it did not detract at all.
Certainly this is a book with flaws, some of the supporting characters needed better development. The science sounds dubious to this layman, but these faults pale beside the intriguing story, the layers of relationships and the magic of the locale.
"my idea of a great beach read"
I love novels with a great sweep, complex relationships and good sex. I cannot abide poor writing or formula novels. This was a perfect break from Roth, Nabokov, Stegner, Franzen, and the other literary great modern writers. If you like this book, loved "Cutting for Stone" and the "History of Love" and find reading Eco like going to school, please consider sharing great reads with me.
