Pierce Waverly, the Earl of Devonmont, has led an unabashed rogue’s life, letting no woman near his heart. Inexplicably abandoned as a child to be raised by distant relatives, he never forgave his parents, refusing to read any of his mother’s letters after his father’s death. Then came a letter that shook his resolve. A Christmas visit to Montcliff might prove his last chance to discover the truth of his past, and come to terms with the stranger he calls "Mother". But two surprises await him at Montcliff....

Since I did read the other reviews about the narrator, I only have myself to blame. But I like this author so wanted to hear it. The only voice that was really bad was the lead male, but since that is a prominent character, it really affected my enjoyment of the book. The narrator made Pierce sound like a villain in a bad radio show. I have rarely heard such a poor voice in any audible book. He did a good job with most of the others, including the females. I did like this story, but I know I'll never listen to it again, and will avoid any others narrated by this reader. Still like this author though. The story is a good one.

One of the things I love about books by Georgette Heyer is the different types of heroes and heroines. This book has that, with the very shy duke who would never be the lead character in any typical romance. Her books make you believe in the average person. I love this plot, the scrapes that he gets into, the incredibly ditzy foundling, the transformation of the duke and therefore of his romance. Loved it from start to finish. And I have yet to hear narration by this author that was not first rate. Always love her work. Highly recommend this one.

Penniless Elinor is rather surprised at the carriage that meets her from the stage, and more so at the decayed grandeur of the house to which she's transported. Realising that there has been a case of mistaken identity she agrees to an audacious plan.

I have 3 or 4 books by Heyer that I rank at the top of my list, this is joining them. Just the right combination of author with narrator. I love her stories with great secondary characters that are well developed, in this case the siblings of Edward. The dialog is really what makes these books. Sadly, I've been listening to so many by this author that many other romances are boring for me now. These books are not steamy romances as so many of this type are. The enjoyment is in the character development, the subtle dialog and the often funny scenes that come as a result.

This is a fun listen, liked how the plot unfolds and the secondary characters add so much. I did have a harder time with this 'couple' than in some other books by Heyer. Just couldn't totally picture them together. But I still recommend this book because it is so much fun. And the narration is great. Lately all I listen to is books by this author, they are a great escape and not typical romance. Highly recommend.

One of my favorites by Heyer. So glad I ignored the really awful picture on the front. I know these are older books but honestly, this picture is ridiculous even for 50 years ago. That said, the book is great. Loved both the hero and heroine, and the other characters were well-developed, too. The narration was so good, I was laughing out loud at the bratty voice of Tiffany. Just love this author, the dialog is what makes these books.

This is a fun listen that kept me very entertained. I loved the antics of Penn, she acted on impulse which of course is usually not a good idea. Ricky's reactions were usually tolerant and helpful. The storyline in this book may have been used before by many authors. What makes Heyer's books is the dialog. She has a real talent for writing great conversation and infusing it with nuances that help develop the characters. One of the funniest characters in this book was Mr. Brandon. I could just picture him all dressed up like a dandy in the country village. Just way to many fun things to mention in a review without spoiling it for others. Narration was top notch. Highly recommend if you like this genre. And definitely worth a credit.

Got this after reading several other reviews that mentioned it as a favorite. It is one of the best. The story had me laughing out loud, the antics of the younger brothers and how Alverstoke was drawn into this family, so well written. Just love how Heyer creates these story lines. And this narrator was amazing. He truly was an actor, not all the narrators achieve that. He was able to infuse the humor, irony, anger, all those emotions in the dialog. I would give 10 stars if I could for the story and the narration. You do have to like Regency period romances to enjoy these books. Will be listening to many more by this author.

Just finished listening to this one, and once again enjoyed this author. Have never 'read' any of her books. Discovered them on audible after reading some other reviews. I thought this one was an excellent story. Reminded me of Jane Austen books with the personalities unfolding and the subtle humor. I love most of the books by this author because they are a change of pace from more modern romance writing. I liked all the voices the narrator used except for the stepmother. It was too shrill and 'fake'. However, the others were very good. Will be looking for more titles by this author.

This was a fun listen, had a good plot, strong characters and was well-researched. The details supported the story line but did not get boring. I listen to these books for escape, not a history lesson. Naturally things are a little glossed over, it is a romance after all. But that's why it's a nice escape. Appreciated the added 'ghost' and healer, those were very much a part of everyday life for many in that time period. Thought the narrator did an excellent job, loved the way he said Sileas, and the characters were easily distinguished. Will be listening to the next in the series as soon as it is downloaded. Since it is highly unlikely I will ever get to see the real setting for these books in Scotland, I'm glad these stories are available in audio.

Have to wonder as others have, why there were rave reviews for this book. It was very predictable, not even believable in parts. The narrator was good except I didn't care for the voice she gave the heroine. Will not listen to others in the series and definitely not spend a credit on them.

This was a surprisingly fun book with interesting characters and plot twists. Got it for a sale price, will definitely listen to the next in the series. Had not listened to any by this author. Really liked the humor infused in the scenes, the 'bard' persona assumed by the hero, and the way he saw through to the real personality of the heroine. Guess I'm not as picky as some listeners with this narrator. I thought he was fine, have heard some better but overall I think he did a decent job.
