  • World War Z: The Complete Edition (Movie Tie-in Edition): An Oral History of the Zombie War

    • ABRIDGED (12 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Max Brooks
    • Narrated By Max Brooks, Alan Alda, John Turturro, and others

World War Z: The Complete Edition is a new recording of Max Brooks’ best-selling novel, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, featuring 21 additional Hollywood A-list actors and sci-fi fan favorites performing stories not included in the original edition. New narrators include Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese, Spiderman star Alfred Molina, The Walking Dead creator Frank Darabont, rapper Common, Firefly star Nathan Fillion, Shaun of the Dead’s Simon Pegg, and members of the casts of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes and more!

Kim Venatries says: "A Good Story with an All Star Cast but ABRIDGED"
"For those who week an engaging story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Very much! World War Z not only has a strong stroyline, but the audiobook is a lengthy one - roughly 12 hours or so to keep its listeners plenty entertained. It can be quite difficult to simply review the audiobook without remnants of the story popping up in my review. But I must say, it was not easy to simply put this one down....not even for 5 minutes.

What did you like best about this story?

The narrator. As many fans of the book know, this story revolves around the narrator's encounter with various survivors of the post-apocalyptic zombie war. The survivors recount their experience with the undead and what measures were taken in order to survive. I very much enjoyed the narrator's interjections with questions I myself may have asked.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not had the privilege to listen to Max Brooks in other stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It was difficult to put this story down. As mentioned earlier, the story was not only engaging, but the voice performances were quite exceptional (although some accents seemed to be forced).

    Any additional comments?

This edition of World War Z is one that I would not pass up. Audible recently updated this version to its entirety. I thank Audible for listening to its members! I don't want to discuss too much about the story...just experience it for yourself!

A great addition to any zombie literature fan!!

  • The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 57 mins)
    • By Junot Diaz
    • Narrated By Jonathan Davis, Staci Snell
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. Oscar dreams of becoming the Dominican J. R. R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the Fuku: the curse that has haunted Oscar's family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still waiting for his first kiss, is just its most recent victim.

    Kathleen says: "Fabulous listen"
    "A wonderous tale"
    Any additional comments?

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is a book that deserves to be read. It's a story that speaks beyond the author's words with truth about life and death. I found myself at odds at many times making every attempt to shield my emotions as the story unfolded. Political, honest, happy, tragic, horrifying, sexual, historical....these are the underlying themes that make this story interesting - one to keep any reader engaged! Happy reading everyone! Peace and love!

  • The Thicket

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Joe R. Lansdale
    • Narrated By Will Collyer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Jack Parker knows all too well how treacherous turn-of-the-century East Texas can be. His parents did not survive a smallpox epidemic. His grandfather was murdered. Now his sister Lula has been kidnapped by a criminal who may believe wearing a dead man's clothes protects them both from death. With bounty hunter Shorty, a charismatic and cunning dwarf, and Eustace, a gravedigging son of an ex-slave, the heartbroken young Jack sets off on an epic quest to rescue his sister from the corrupt men who control much of the new territory.

Matthew Ortiz says: "Lansdale will knock you out!"
    "Lansdale will knock you out!"
What did you love best about The Thicket?

Lansdale's ability to tell a great and funny story, even in the midst of a dark East Texas tragedy. For the audiobook version, Will Collyer brought this dark tale to life.

What did you like best about this story?

Lansdale's use of dialogue between his characters. Each personality is described so vividly as Lansdale's ability to effectively bring his characters to life is shown. I love the change in language between these characters as they are all so very different.

Which character – as performed by Will Collyer – was your favorite?

    My favorite was Shorty.

    Any additional comments?

This is a highly recommended book! Not only does Lansdale once again deliver a great story, but Will Collyer does a fantastic job of breathing life into the characters. A must read!

  • Night Film: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Marisha Pessl
    • Narrated By Jake Weber

On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

    linda says: "Eerie, Relentless, Riveting"
    "Well worth 20+ hours"
Where does Night Film rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I generally have a difficult time ranking books even one as original as Marisha Pessl's novel. All I can say is it's definitely well worth the 20+ hours of audio.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I will just say that every character in this story helps bring the novel to life. After completing the final chapter, it's important to keep any favoritism to can never be too sure you know the characters ;)

    Which scene was your favorite?

The ending. Sorry, that's all you get.

Who was the most memorable character of Night Film and why?

Stanislas Cordova. This mysterious character is the center of everyone's attention. Although the main characters are attempting to discover the cause of Ashley Cordova's death, the fixation remains on Stanislas throughout the story. This is extremely important in expanding on the novel's theme....perception.

    Any additional comments?

Night Film is definitely well worth the extended play. The story is original, engaging, and superbly performed by Jake Weber (for those who remember the Dawn of the Dead remake by Zack Snyder). My only gripe with the story was its overuse of metaphors. At times, I felt it got a little out of hand. But this is simply a matter of preference and opinion. Marisha Pessl is a gifted author who succeeded at writing one hell of a book. Enjoy!

  • Oh, the Places You'll Go!

    • UNABRIDGED (7 mins)
    • By Dr. Seuss
    • Narrated By John Lithgow

Here is the incomparable Dr. Seuss' story of an unnamed "you" whose travels through the world involve a series of ups and downs. His ultimate success, however, is "98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed!"

Matthew Ortiz says: "Oh, I enjoyed it very much :)"
"Oh, I enjoyed it very much :)"
What did you love best about Oh, the Places You'll Go!?

It's a children's story with a lot to learn from. In this audiobook version, John Lithgow does a fantastic job as narrator. The character, known as 'you', experiences the ups and downs of the roads we travel in life. They are not always happy ones, but they are indeed ones in which we may prevail! John Lithgow's voice is always on key throughout the various moods of the story but NEVER too threatening or 'scary' for a child to enjoy!

I would most definitely play this for my little ones!

What other book might you compare Oh, the Places You'll Go! to and why?

    None. It's a one of a kind :)

Which character – as performed by John Lithgow – was your favorite?

As mentioned above, John Lithgow's voice is always on key! What a fantastic job!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A chuckle here and there. I feel John's narration of the story brought it to life! The music also does a great job and stays on point with Lithgow's narration!

    Any additional comments?

A great story for children to enjoy! The audiobook is a great addition to the Dr. Seuss collection and most of that I will credit to John Lithgow's narration and to the music as well!
