Four amazing talents have come together to create one of the most unforgettable events of the year. The results are spectacular - each story is as unique as a lover's first kiss.

"Stories - Excellent / Narration - Halfway There"

I love the premise of this collection, and for the most part it is well executed. The individual works are characteristic of the the four writers, and if you are familiar with and like them already, you will enjoy this. Simon Prebble did a nice job of narration as well. However, he only narrated two of the stories. The other two narrations were much less enjoyable. For some reason, the woman who narrated the Mary Balogh story said the word "lover" as if she was taking part in a Saturday Night Live sketch. It was distracting, annoying, and unnecessary. I took off a star for this.

When Simone Hollingsworth fails to turn up at bell-ringing practice, her fellow campanologists are unsurprised. Bell-ringing, it seems to the villagers of Fawcett Green, is just Simone’s latest hobby to have fallen by the wayside. Only her neighbours suspect the worst, for Simone’s husband has been behaving very oddly. When the discovery of a body draws Chief Inspector Barnaby to the village, it soon becomes apparent that unravelling the mystery will stretch the Inspector’s powers of persuasion to the full....

I recently discovered Caroline Graham and have enjoyed her books immensely. This one had a very interesting plot line, and kept me involved from start to finish. I like the characters, and thought the narraction was good also.

I think Graham upholds the tradition of the British mystery in a country village - complete with all the insights into what is going on behind the lace curtains.

Once on the investigation of a murder case involving a costume designer and his older and wealthier lover, Detective Alan Banks finds himself plunged into a case where nothing is as it seems. More and more his own words about the victim's latest production, Othello, are coming back to haunt him, for "jealousy, betrayal, envy, ambition, greed, lust, revenge: all the colors of darkness" are quickly becoming his world as well.

I have listened to 5 or 6 of the Peter Robinson DCI Banks books now, and have enjoyed them all. This one was a bit different in subject matter, and I was a somewhat disappointed in the wind up, but I stayed interested and listened nearly non-stop to this one. Simon Prebble did a good job, but I still find it a bit difficult to dintinguish between characters when women are talking. His voice is very nice in tone though.

Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measure of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors---among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed.

This was my first encounter with DCI Banks from Peter Robinson. It found the plot interesting, and the movement from one set of characters to another was smooth. The performance wasn't the best I have heard, and the female characters were sometimes a bit difficult.

Overall, I would recommend this to a fan of the British contemporary crime novel.
