  • The Hunger Games

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Suzanne Collins
    • Narrated By Carolyn McCormick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Teddy says: "The Book Deserves The Hype"
    "Terrible Narrator, unlikeable protagonist"

This book was clearly a take on Stephen King's The Running Man, but I loved the concept. Its another example of missed potential. You like many of the characters in the book, but the protagonist is not one of them. Ultimately it pushes the willing suspension of disbelief too far and become tedious.

I suggest reading the Bloody Jack series by L A Meyer. You will love them.

  • The Red Pyramid: The Kane Chronicles, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 32 mins)
    • By Rick Riordan
    • Narrated By Kevin R. Free, Katherine Kellgren
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Since his mother’s death six years ago, Carter Kane has been living out of a suitcase, traveling the globe with his father, the brilliant Egyptologist Dr. Julius Kane. But while Carter’s been homeschooled, his younger sister, Sadie, has been living with their grandparents in London. Sadie has just what Carter wants — school friends and a chance at a “normal” life.

Heather says: "Rick Riordan does it again..."
    "Makes you miss Percy"

I see that many others feel the same way about these books. They were good, but do not reach the heights of the Percy Jackson tales. I hope that the next book elevates the narrative to the level of the Olympian stories. Katherine Kellgren is amazing again, and I find myself seeking out books that she has read because of her incredible talent.

  • Sisters Red

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Jackson Pearce
    • Narrated By Erin Moon, Michal Friedman, Suzanne Toren
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Scarlet March lives to hunt the Fenris--the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She's determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.

Jay says: "Great concept, but too much whining"
"Great concept, but too much whining"

I enjoyed many parts of this book, but in the end there was just too much whining. I am not sure if the author was chasing the same crowd that so loves the Twilight series, but the book reads in very much the same way. Too much of the book is convenient, and the parts that are well done leave you wishing the book was more consistent. In the end it is a forgettable story that makes you shake your head at what could have been.

  • Here, There Be Dragons

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By James A. Owen
    • Narrated By James Langton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

An unusual murder brings together three strangers, John, Jack, and Charles, on a rainy night in London during the first World War. An eccentric little man called Bert tells them that they are now the caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica: an atlas of all the lands that have ever existed in myth and legend, fable and fairy tale.

David says: "Rich Imaginative Fantastic World"
"Great fun, and wonderful Easter Eggs"

I liked this book a great deal, and the ending made me love it. There are some wonderful allusions to other great works of fiction spread throughout, but the ending was absolutely brilliant!

  • The Time Paradox: Artemis Fowl, Book 6

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Eoin Colfer
    • Narrated By Enn Reitel

After disappearing for three years, Artemis Fowl has returned to a life different from the one he had. Now he's a big brother, and spends his days teaching his twin siblings the important things in life, such as how to properly summon a waiter at a French restaurant..

Chris says: "Disappointing Narraration, buy the paper book."
"Terrible Decision to change the narrator"

I love these books, and part of the reason I love listening to them was Nathaniel Parker's amazing narration. So many of our favorite characters come back in this book it was shocking to hear them in such wooden narration. I would purchase this book again if it were rerecorded.

However if the next book does not go back to Nathaniel I will be sticking to the hard cover.

  • Wings

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Aprilynne Pike
    • Narrated By Mandy Siegfried
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful - too beautiful for words. Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings. In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

Francesca@UTCBookBlog says: "Good book for young teens"
    "Twilight...with fairies"

Not sure what to say here. It reads like a lighter take on Twilight. I did not like that book, so I do not enjoy this one. There is some potential with the story, but it definitely was written for the tween set. Apparently Miley Cyrus is tapped to play the lead character in the movie version of this novel. If you like Hannah Montana I am sure you will like this.

  • Under the Dome: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (34 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Stephen King
    • Narrated By Raul Esparza
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Russell says: "Glad I Listened to 11-22-63 First"
"Imagine Lord of the Flies, by Stephen King"

I was blown away by this book. The length was daunting, but after reading it I have no idea what I would have cut. Every scene is important and the story moves at a rather brisk pace. I loved Lord of the Flies when I first read it. Having just finished UtD I no longer have to imagine what Stephen would have done with the same material.

  • Frankenstein, Book Three: Dead and Alive

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By John Bedford Lloyd
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

As a devastating hurricane approaches, as the benighted creations of Victor Helios begin to spin out of control, as New Orleans descends into chaos and the future of humanity hangs in the balance, the only hope rests with Victor's first, failed attempt to build the perfect human. Deucalion's centuries-old history began as the original manifestation of a soulless vision and it is fated to end in the ultimate confrontation between a damned creature and his mad creator.

    William says: "Frustrating"
    "Horrible Disappointment"

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series. Koontz succeeds in removing every bit of pleasure I took from those books. If you have read the first two and have been looking forward to the completion of the series, do yourself a favor, give this one a pass.

The ending you imagine is much better than this bit of dross.

  • American Gods

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Neil Gaiman
    • Narrated By George Guidall
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

For the three years Shadow spent in prison, all he wanted was to get back to the loving arms of his wife and stay out of trouble for the rest of his life. But days before his release, he learns that his wife has been killed in an accident, and his world becomes a colder place.

Joseph says: "Amazing, powerful book about America."
"One of my favorites of all time"

I loved this book to pieces. Not since The Dark Tower has a book grabbed me like this. Read this book!

  • Beat the Reaper: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Josh Bazell
    • Narrated By Robert Petkoff
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Meet Peter Brown, a young Manhattan emergency room doctor with an unusual past that is just about to catch up with him. His morning begins with the quick disarming of a would-be mugger, followed by a steamy elevator encounter with a sexy young pharmaceutical rep, topped off by a visit with a new patient - and from there Peter's day is going to get a whole lot worse and a whole lot weirder.

Chuck says: "Great book and great narrator"
    "A Great Time"

This book will not win any awards for prose, nor will it forge any new genre of literature. What it will do is give you a great few hours of fun. If we could give half stars this would be a 3.5. I have recommended it as escapist reading to several of my friends and they have felt the same way. This book is a completely entertaining way to waste a few hours. Turn off you brain and have a ball.
