They burned her home. They stole her brother and sister. But vengeance is following. Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not a woman to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old step father Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own. And out in the lawless Far Country the past never stays buried.

The Coldfire trilogy tells a story of discovery and battle against evil on a planet where a force of nature exists that is capable of reshaping the world in response to psychic stimulus. This terrifying force, much like magic, has the power to prey upon the human mind, drawing forth a person's worst nightmare images or most treasured dreams and indiscriminately giving them life. This is the story of two men. They are absolute enemies who must unite to conquer an evil greater than anything their world has ever known.

What made the experience of listening to Black Sun Rising the most enjoyable?

I was a HUGE fan of this series in print when I as a youngster....
I was overjoyed to see it finally available in Audio!!

The story remains as great as ever. (just go with it past the grisly start of
    the story!)

The Audible narator is servicable, but I had hopes for something slightly
more "rough-edged" to portray the "Hunter" Character.

Still a great buy that you will not be disappointed with!

Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumor, and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He’s had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He’s certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove.

What disappointed you about The Sense of an Ending?

The writing was good, but the ending was quick and rather rude.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Many of the side plots, his kid, his ex-wife, the friends kid were left
    Without any sort of conclusion.

They say Black Dow has killed more men than winter and clawed his way to the throne of the North up a hill of skulls. The King of the Union, ever a jealous neighbor, is not about to stand by smiling while Black Dow claws his way any higher. The orders have been given, and the armies are toiling through the northern mud. Thousands of men are converging on a forgotten ring of stones, on a worthless hill, in an unimportant valley, and they've brought a lot of sharpened metal with them.

From the satirical pen of one of France's greatest cynics comes the story of Candide - young, innocent, guileless - who is cast upon the world after Baron Thunder-ten-trockh learns that his lusty daughter, Cunegonde, has tried to seduce the young man. The novel chronicles Candide's adventures with his blindly optimistic tutor, Dr. Pangloss, through any number of disastrous experiences, as they search for the answers to life's perennial questions.

    Tobin says: "Voltaire's Classic"
    "Candide is too dated"
    Overall

Humor generally does not do well across the ages,
and this book is a perfect example.

It does have some good fun poking dark humor at
the Catholic church and the Jesuits in paticular.
It also has some funny 'Pythonesque" moments in
revolt against the right of Kings.

Over all though, much of the humor falls flat,
and it was a struggle to finish.

Seneca was dedicated to Stoicism, and in his essays and letters he explained the stoic position on many fundamental issues: pleasure and the problem of desire, happiness, and contentment; anger, fear, living in the present, how to think for yourself, anxiety and tranquillity, goodness, freedom, trusting the universe; courage, opportunity, cruelty and how to deal with it, friendship, love and trust, death and how to live, learning , chance and fate, time, aspirations, wisdom - and more.

I am a fan of Seneca,
and have read most of his works.

This collection of sayings was not done
    all that well.

The female voice is difficult to understand
    at times.

The audio file is worth listening to.
It will give you a sense of Senaca's thoughts,
but I had higher hopes for it.

I am a big fan of the Stoics, and this
little audio file captures the spirit
of their philosophy. The audio file does
a good job of bringing the stoic tradition
into the 21st century, and making it meaningful
    to a listener in 2008.

Bravo! I would like to see similiar treatments
    on Seneca-Marcus Aurelieus (sp?)-and Cicero.
