After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke Lamora and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can't rest for long - and they are soon back doing what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves.

Anthony says: "This is how you write a series!"
    "Timeline"
    Overall

Red Seas is an excellent continuation of the adventures of Locke & Co. However, Scott Lynch has a way of going back and forth in the timeline that takes some getting used to. In Lies of Locke... it was pretty obvious, not so much here. Once you get into the rythum, it all makes sense and well worth the effort. A very, very enjoyable listen! When's Book 3 coming out? I'm actually going to miss the Gentlemen Bastards.

This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

    "Too much detail..."
    Overall

I was very excited to start the Master and Commander series. These books seemed right up our alley. But the story was so bogged down in nautical detail, numbers and measurements that my mind kept wandering far away. Historical fiction is our favorite genre but this is just too, too much "historical details" and not enough story. We kept hoping that the set-up would pass and the story would get rolling but half way through we ran out of patience and attention span. Sad.

An unusual murder brings together three strangers, John, Jack, and Charles, on a rainy night in London during the first World War. An eccentric little man called Bert tells them that they are now the caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica: an atlas of all the lands that have ever existed in myth and legend, fable and fairy tale.

Here, There Be Dragons is just a fun, sit-back-and-entertain-me book. The story is easy to follow, has interesting twists and most important, the characters are easy to like and care about. James Langton did an excellent job narrating. Bought this book on sale, just because.... Now that we've finished it, we're thinking we want to know what happens in the next book.

An orphan's life is harsh---and often short---in the island city of Camorr, built on the ruins of a mysterious alien race. But born with a quick wit and a gift for thieving, Locke Lamora has dodged both death and slavery, only to fall into the hands of an eyeless priest known as Chains---a man who is neither blind nor a priest. A con artist of extraordinary talent, Chains passes his skills on to his carefully selected "family" of orphans---a group known as the Gentlemen Bastards.

Scott Lynch and Michael Page create the perfect storm with this audio book. The writing is excellent, the narration does it justice.

What's a 22-year-old Irish American cop who's never been out of Massachusetts before doing at Beardsley Hall, an English country house, having lunch with King Haakon of Norway? Billy Boyle himself wonders. Back home in Southie, hed barely made detective when war was declared. Unwilling to fight and perhaps die for England, he was relieved when his mother wangled a job for him on the staff of a general married to her distant cousin.

    "Best Kept Secret"
    Overall

I bought this first Billy Boyle book because the concept of a mystery in WWII intrigued me. Never heard of the author or the series. In this case, the gamble has paid off. My husband and I are enjoying it immensely. The author has both a good sense of humor and a sensitivity to the "common soldier" that is a winning combination. The mystery is good and most important, the characters are very likeable. Marc Vietor does a fine job narrating.... but we're in Minnesota... we think everyone has an accent but us. We will definitely be listening to the whole series.

In lower Manhattan, a charnel pit of horror is uncovered: the remains of 36 people murdered and gruesomely dismembered over 130 years ago by an unknown serial killer. Just as a museum archaeologist and an enigmatic FBI agent begin to unravel the clues to the killings, a fresh spree of copy-cat murders and surgical mutilation erupts around them. Mixing science and terror in a way only they can, Preston and Child deliver a novel that's as gruesome as it is enthralling.

    "Abridged books"
    Overall

This is our first abridged version of a book. And we had a unique opportunity as we listened to most of the unabridged version on borrowed CDs that didn't all work. This is what we learned: It's a lot like seeing the movie after you've read a book. If you want the nuts and bolts of a story, abridged is ok, but you loose all the fun stuff. The characters and events that make it interesting but aren't necessary to the single plot aren't there.
All this being said, the Pendergast series is imaginative, scary and just plain fun reading and we're enjoying them all. This book gets minus a star because it's abridged.
