"An amazing look into the hereafter..."
I fell in love with this book after seeing the movie version starring Robin Williams many years ago. When I originally read this book, I realized how vastly different it was to the movie, in its settings, message and general story-line. This audio book is no different. Personally, as much as I loved the movie, the book is a thousand times better.
This book follows the general ideas of most every religion and smartly puts them into a single concept of "Summer Land", which is everyone’s own personal vision of heaven. This book talks about the various concepts of heaven and hell, and from a first person perspective is both remarkably enticing, and disturbing.
We all have our own concepts of what will or will not happen to us when we die, but this books seems to tackle intelligently all the concepts of heaven and the hereafter, without rebuking or insulting any one belief system.
Richard Matheson has created a beautiful world of the hereafter that anyone would be grateful to go to, based on all major documents from cultures around the world, taking the gross roots of all concepts and finding the balance between them all to create a new world. No matter what your beliefs of life after death, this is a fantstic novel about death, never giving up on life, and knowing when to let go... this journey takes you on a first person perspective on the process of death, finding your own heaven, seeing the paradise the awaits, and the torment of hell we create for ourselves as well in our own negative thoughts and actions...
I highly recommend this book. The narrator is a little bland at times, but easy enough to over look...
"A fun, funny and truly original story"
The great originality in the story, the characters and races of aliens you meet on the journey to the other worlds. The way this story is put together, along with its fantastic easter eggs of treasure (subtle jokes and references to pop-scifi, etc).
The humor and the wonderful characters from around the universe...
Wow, he really brought each character to life in a witty and fun style that left you addicted and wanting more. His comedic timing is perfect.
Moved me? No, but the whole story was just great...
Love this book; not sure why it got so many negatives, but this one of the better books I listened to in a long time. Will definitely listen to this one again... give it a try, you won't be disappointed.
"Funniest book in years."
This is by far in my top 5, I will listen to this again and again. Funny, fantastic narrator just plain wrong in all the best ways.
The screw ball comedy, the most absurd and unexpected things happening and the great personality of the characters (outstanding writing) makes this funny, perfectly paced and keeps you smiling; when it doesn't have you looking over your shoulder for a floating jellyfish)
Great range, I felt like his character was talking to me directly. His performance accentuates the humor and is what made this one of the best audio books I have ever listened to.
I laughed a LOT. Very funny if you can appreciate the humor
GET THIS BOOK! You won't be disappointed...
"Dead of Night: A great zombie ride with a new take"
An original take, great cop thriller leading up to a zombie apocolypse (really great new perspectives, such as showing the point of view of the zombie, and a great foundation in both science and voodoo) make for a great small-town cop zombie thriller.
All great characters, but none that I really latched on to. Way too much character development throughout the book, which is great, but really detracted from the story more than a few times...
Great narration; Seemed like he would be slow at first, but he turned out a great performance, really believable and a terrific range.
Without giving away the ending, the last scene with surviving infected; with Dez and JT,,, wonderfully written.
Great book, moved too slow at the beginning for me, but still a fantastic book. Great premise, original take from a zombie author guru... I love Mayberry and will give almost anything he does a try; especially after the fantastic Rot & Ruin / Dust & Decay books (not to mention the awesome Joe Ledger series).Anyway, you'll love it, give it a try, just don't expect the action to be continual, but the last half of the book is totally worth it.Z
"Best book in years!!!"
I had unfortunately never heard of Christopher Moore, and that was my only regret. This book was easily one of the funniest, most well paced and amazing books I have read...er...listened to, in years. Moore has an amazing talent for subtle, well paced and dark humor that forced me on more than one occasion to have to pull to the side of the freeway, wiping tears of uncontrollable laughter from my eyes. What the people who saw me must have thought, I don't know, but who cares!
The narrator was amazing, and obviously his talented voice and comedic timing played a lot in this story, but only because it was so well written. I was disappointed to find out the he (Fisher Stevens) did not narrate more of his books, but I am a sold fan of his now, too.
I don't laugh easily, and not too quickly entertained, certainly not enough to write a review about a book here. But this book was amazing. It had only one downfall. The one thing that angered me and made me regret listening to this story was the simple fact that it came to an end. This could have been a thousand pages or a thousand hours long and I would have loved it every bit of the way. I will listen to this again and again, and will go out and buy the actual book and hope I one day get to meet the author and get his autograph, and thank him for writing such a wonderful story.
His characters were so rich; I wanted to be Charlie Asher myself. I wanted to be his friend, and live in his world. I want there to be a sequel, I want to see the movie, I want more of Moore!!!
If you are even remotely on the fence about this; rest assured that someone who laughs rarely fell in love with this book instantaneously, and promise you that you will not be disappointed.
I am downloading LAMB now, same author and narrator. I am incredibly non-religious, but any author this good, with a talented voice such as Fisher Stevens behind it, I am gladly willing for the first time to go blindly into this novel as well.
Thank you

"A frightening look at a new threat"
This book starts off like any other day, with an event that happens to all of us sooner or later. The lights go out and the power is gone. But this time, it stays off...
A scenario that has rarely been considered, an EMP attack, knocks the U.S. back about 200 years, struggling for survival in a world that we became all too comfortable being pampered by. No food, no electronics, and too few who remember how to farm or build old-style machinery.
With moments that truly wrench your heart, give you significant pause for consideration, this book, and its amazing nararrator, take you on journey that shows you just how easily our comfortable and convenient lives can be reduced, within weeks, to fighting for food, medications and our very own survival.
An outstanding book, one of the best I have listened to in a long while...
