This is the first audio book I ever listened to, and I am absolutely amazed. Of course, I knew from school that the Egyptian achievements were stunning, but had I listened to something like Brier's course about 30 years ago, chances are that I'd be an egyptologist today. Egypt was much more incredible than I ever thought it would have been, and Brier presents it in an absorbing way. As soon as I had finished listening to it I just had to start again from the beginning.
I love the Great Courses, and this one is one of the best I have been listening to so far. I would absolutely recommend it to a friend, provided that he/she has some basic scientific and mathematical understanding and is interested in how modern physics explain our world and the remaining mysteries.
The course could perhaps be compared to Hawking's Brief History of Time, but I liked The Higgs Boson and Beyond even more (perhaps because Hawking's book is made to be read rather than being listened to). Moreover, this course is more up-to-date.
