"Loved the writing and the narrator was top notch!"
Ya'know if you are sensitive to language then this book isn't for you but it is appropriate to the characters. The characters were what made the story and even though many of the back characters were under developed. I think it makes sense because the whole story is essentially told by the main character. The narration was near perfect and I wish he had other books to listen to in portfolio. I would definitely recommend it!
"middle of the road book, narration is"
Kelsey Grammer has a similiar voice pattern to Scott Brick, it is a good job but does dip toward annoying at times. I wouldn't avoid a book narrated by him but I wouldn't look for one just because he did it. Writing is fine, not fantastic but ...fine ....
"I only did it because of Diana Gabaldon"
This was not a good grouping of stories. I love Diana's writings so it was somewhat worth it for that but honestly I tried to give the other authors a shot in an effort to find more authors I would enjoy. There are maybe 2 others that are decent but no-one else is a Wow.
"excellent continuation of the story"
first the praise: I enjoyed the series. An interesting imaginary tale. Good writing, good characters, different social political ideas.
This critical part does not change my mind about how I enjoyed the series but does warrant commenting
First, Robert Sawyer always says you can read his series books as a stand alone novel. This is not at all the case with this series, especially this 3rd book. I actually prefer to not have a full recap of the previous books in the series, so for me it was better to have it not be continuously recapped.
Second, the sociopolitical message that Robert Sawyer makes obvious in his books is an interesting take on life. I do not agree with him on many things but I am not insulted by ideas. Since I form my own ideas and opinions he is free to write books stating his world view and I can buy and read or not. It is entertaining but if you are easily offended then I would advise that you spend your credits elsewhere.
"Not a spoiler..Great book until she didn't wrap it"
I really enjoyed Faithful Place. So I tried, "In the Woods", She could have been wrapped up in about 12-15hrs. Don't read the review by Larry Jun 22, 2007 because its a spoiler. Truth is the book would have been beyond excellent if she had shortened it up. I absolutely love the narration though which kept me in for longer.
"Not my favorite"
I have been reading John Sandford going back to when he wrote under a different name for the Virgil Flowers stories. The plot line of this book is not the kind of materials I want to listen to. It's a bit more edgy than usual for Sandford. I'm definitely not a prude but listening this storyline did not leave me wanting more.
"It's not my favorite writing; narration is good"
This is my first Cornwell book. I thought character development was lacking. Hook was a weak character. Not much going on with him. I love Gabaldon's work and Follett's Pillars and World without end but I wouldn't put this in their league. I will try another Cornwell book but if the characters are this shallow I probably will not continue.
"Same Narrator as the Stieg Larson series"
Story is very well written. The narration is enjoyable. I loved the Stieg Larson series in a big way because of Simon Vance's narration. I found out about this Dragon series from a list of favorite authors listed by Jim Butcher. It was a great pick! Well worth the Credit
"Planet of the Apes obsessed"
Mr Sawyer is obviously obsessed with the Planet of the Apes. If you can get passed it then it's a great book. I am not sensitive to his political leanings and can appreciate the immense complexity of his plot and details. That is what I enjoy about his writings. We worth doing the whole series.
"Am I snoring with pretention?"
I like the narrator but the story is boooring, It's all about pretentious conversation. Nothing actually happens and when it does it is glossed over. Brutal so far. I read...alot of books! I love long books but I expect the characters to be developed in a I way that I actually care about them.
