When Jack left the police force to join the Forensic Science Unit in Canberra, he thought his days of visiting crime scenes were over. But while he's on leave in Sydney, his old friend Bob asks him to help out with a series of grisly murders. Someone is horribly mutilating and murdering convicted paedophiles the moment they are released from jail. Still grieving from the collapse of his marriage and the disappearance of Jacinta, his teenage daughter, four years earlier, Jack tries to make sense of what is happening.

This was a very enjoyable listen. The characters were compelling & it was well written, with excellent narration. The plot was interesting if a tiny bit predictable & a little heavy-handed in places. I read another one of her (Gabrielle Lord's) books, "Feeding the Demons," which I liked even better.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Would you try another book from Robert Galbraith and/or Robert Glenister?

I liked the detective enough to try another...

What could Robert Galbraith have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The characters were compelling & well drawn out. However, the plot was a little too implausible & convoluted tho. I think she gilded the lily a bit too much by forcing suspicion on, well, someone else... and the plot-turner didn't really work. "Casual Vacancy" was great. I think I expected more in that vein.

Did The Cuckoo's Calling inspire you to do anything?

More gardening...which is what I do when I listen to books on tape. It was compelling enough to keep listening, and the performance was very good.

    Any additional comments?

I stopped reading Harry Potter books when our (THEN!) 4 year old did a better job pronouncing the crazy words that JK Rowling created than I could. She has since read & re-read the novels many times -- she keeps one or another by her bedside at all times. She is now in her senior year at UK (haha...Univ of Kentucky), and very successful on many levels. Her "greed to read" is due in large part to JKR. If you can pass on my thanks, pls do. And if JKR is into horses, pls have her look our daughter up if she is ever in Lexington, KY.

A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith. Detective Inspector Fin Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate. For Lewis-born Macleod, the case represents a journey both home and into his past. Something lurks within the close-knit island community. Something sinister. As Fin investigates, old skeletons begin to surface and soon, he, the hunter, becomes the hunted.

Would you listen to The Blackhouse again? Why?

I don't re-listen. But I will definitely seek out other books by this author!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blackhouse?

I enjoyed the description of the hunting trip: The concept was so foreign to me, but the author made it very real & imaginable.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the outer Hebrides... (jk)

    Any additional comments?

    I enjoyed it!
