A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt. The family house is in the small Far West town of Fingerbone, set on a glacial lake, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck and their mother drove off a cliff to her death.

This is truly one of the most beautifully written books and it is a shame that the reader is so poor. I will be buying this book to *read* again and again.

Henry doesn't think he'll ever be able to get his mind off his parents' divorce. That is, until he meets Pyrgus Malvae, prince of the faerie world. Now Henry must help Pyrgus return home to fight the evil Faeries of the Night.

"Good but what's up with the lesbian affair?"
    Overall

I enjoyed this book (and the second in the series) but the circumstances of the parents' breakup added nothing to the story and may confuse younger readers. This and only this would keep me from recommending this book to some kids. If the fact that the mom had a lesbian affair actually related to something else in the story I would have no problem with it but....it didn't. Adults will have no problem with this part of the story (except that they may find it unnecessary).
