As Mumbai empties under the threat of imminent nuclear annihilation, statistician Sarita can only think of being reunited with her physicist husband. To find him, she must journey across the surreal landscape of a near-abandoned city, braving gangs of competing Hindu and Muslim hoodlums. Joining her is Jaz - a Muslim whose true religion has always been sex. Danger lurks around every corner, but so does the absurd: the patron goddess Devi Mahas even materialized on a beach to save her city....

What disappointed you about The City of Devi?

Cheap sex theatrics to make the story more engaging. Skip the sex and the story would have been interesting on its own.

What could Manil Suri have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Focus more on the post-apocolyptic story line, and less on weird sex.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Interesting perspective on war in the Middle East.

    Any additional comments?

I finished listening to it because I wanted to see how the story ended with the characters, but would not recommend the book.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Clare Cosi used to manage the historic Village Blend coffeehouse…until she opted for quieter pastures and a more suburban life. But after ten years and a little friendly cajoling from the owner (a fresh pot of Jamaican Blue Mountain was all it took), she's back to the grind. With a sprawling rent-free apartment directly above the Village Blend, her cat Java by her side, and plenty of coffeehouse redecorating ideas, Clare is thrilled to return to work. Until she discovers the assistant manager unconscious in the back of the store, coffee grounds strewn everywhere.

What disappointed you about On What Grounds?

I hoped for a good mystery. The plot was boring and simple. Too much time was spent on details.

Would you ever listen to anything by Cleo Coyle again?

    No.

What didn’t you like about Rebecca Gibel’s performance?

I don't think she had much to work with, so the whole thing just fell flat.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from On What Grounds?

The ex-husband, or Just start over completely.
