An author whose previous, wildly successful novels have earned him a reputation as fantasy's master of magic, Brandon Sanderson continues to dazzle audiences with this tale of princesses and gods. In this extraordinary world, those who attain glory return as gods. And those who can master the essence known as breath can perform the most wondrous miracles - or unleash the most devastating havoc.

First thing you need to know. This is a stand alone book, which is something that I love.
Second thing you need to know. This book is character driven. It is not depended on fighting and action, although it contains those things at points. It is not dependent on magic, even though magic is an important part of the story. No, this book is about people and how they act and react to each other on the individual, group, and societal level. It address ideas such as beliefs. But it isn't boring. It is compelling. Brandon Sanderson is a master craftsman of telling stories. He knows how to draw the reader in and make you feel like you are a part of the story. If you give this book a chance, you will see what I mean. Enjoy!

Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills. Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them. And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father.

The thing I love about all of Sanderson's works is that they are all character driven. I could go on and on about the world that Sanderson has built, or the plot of this book and how the mystery was a complete and total "WHAAAAAA?!?!" moment for me when it was revealed, but Brandon Sanderson's greatest strength in writing is his character driven stories. Real, believable people doing what they can in the world they are in. This book may be the first in a series, but it is just another addition to the many masterful works he has done. It is very much worth your time to read or listen to this book. Especially if you are a fan of fantasy or the superhero genres. Enjoy!

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad - because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard. He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long.

An excellent continuation of the Dresden Files series. This book reveals much while bring up more questions. As a series and as a book the Dresden Files and this book are amazing. Some of the best Urban Fantasy ever written. It is a pleasure to have James Marsters back in reading the series. The last book, Ghost Story was read by another reader. That other reader did an amazing job, but Marsters has become the voice of Dresden and will always be. If they ever do the Dresden Files movie or try to do the TV series again he will have to play Harry!

Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden is Chicago's only openly practicing wizard. He is also dead broke. His vast knowledge and magical skills are unfortunately matched by his talent for making powerful enemies and alienating friends. With little more than his integrity left, he accepts an offer of work from Lt. Karin Murphy of Chicago's Special Investigations Unit. He wants to redeem himself in Murphy's eyes and make enough money to quiet his rumbling stomach.

Book 2 in the Dresden File series, this is one of the classics of the series. While I can listen to the entire series over and over, this is a particular favorite. Butcher does a great job making the mystery come alive. He keeps you guessing while spinning a tale with many twists and turns. As always he keeps the story lively with great first person narrative (which I usually dislike) while developing not only the main character, but secondary characters along the way. That is no easy task when your writing in first person. In either case, this second book is a wonderful encore to the stellar first novel Storm Front.

The neo-noir style writing combined with a fascinating world and mystery screams for you to read more. Here, together for the first time, are the shorter works of best-selling author Jim Butcher - a compendium of cases that Harry and his cadre of allies managed to close in record time. The tales range from the deadly serious to the absurdly hilarious.

First let me start off by saying you should not read these short stories (at least not all of them) before you read the series up to the book Changes. If you do the last couple stories will be a real spoiler for you. Second, I want to say that if you are a Dresden Files fan then this book is worth having. While it is short stories, there are some that will really make your day. Stories from the prospective of Thomas and Murphy are a couple good ones. Also it does well at filling in the gaps between books. Well worth the cost or credit.

This book is a well paced sequel to A Hymn Before Battle. Like with the previous book the focus of this one is characters. It also contains the tactical crunch that one looks for in a good Military Science Fiction as well as the science fiction aspect. Still, the measure of a good story is in how it flows around the characters. This is a good one. I do suggest you read the series from the beginning. While John Ringo does a good job recapping, I feel someone starting with this book will miss some really important stuff.

This book is a good example of a quality military Science Fiction. While it contains both the military and science portions of the genre, it also is well designed in that it focuses on what truly drive the plot which is the characters. The story is intriguing and well written. John Ringo has done it again!

The year is 2380. The Intersolar Commonwealth, a sphere of stars some 400 light-years in diameter, contains more than 600 worlds, interconnected by a web of transport "tunnels" known as wormholes. At the farthest edge of the Commonwealth, astronomer Dudley Bose observes the impossible: Over 1,000 light-years away, a star...vanishes. It does not go supernova. It does not collapse into a black hole. It simply disappears.

The author is meandering. The story is jolting. The read is long. I really had a hard time 1) keeping track of all the characters and 2) staying awake. I enjoy a good history book and I've read all of the Wheel of Time series. Initially I thought it was me, but then I realized that it was the book. I am sure some people would love this book, but after nearly 30 hours of listening to be greeted with a cliff hanger ending! No! Not a good book in my mind!

Good Lord Almighty this book is boring! I have tried so hard to listen and enjoy it. I love a great sci-fi, but the author jumps to so many different characters and so many different stories that it makes the Wheel of Time series look easy to read and I've read all of that series! The performer is good, but the material is not. I had a hard enough time staying awake through book one. This second book is the last straw! No more of this author!
