The cadence of the story, like an old "Drag Net" episode of the 60's. A reader/listener will either like the cast of detectives; a strange group, except Steve Carella, or they will not. Like any detective SERIES, and McBain has a long list of books in his 87th Precinct series, the books get better the more one reads them. But back to the cadence of the story; it is slow and repetitive much like, I would imagine, the real like task of tracking down a killer.
Steve Carella is what all cops should be: a good man, a wonderful husband and father, and one who always gets his killer.
A good reader.
I would suggest to anyone who does not know this series to start from the first. Knowing the detectives makes this group of mysteries different than others. But be careful; if you enjoy them, if you begin to care about them, you are in for HOURS AND HOURS of story time.
The reader was great! The story, the protagonist, the reader: I loved them all!
The grim reaper's thoughts throughout the whole book. There were many times when he spoke of carting people away, how tired he was, or how tenderly he cradled them, beautiful writing.
No, unfortunately I have not.
Not possible. Long and emotional; but I would say to get it; listen to it for one sitting and you will be hooked.
LISTEN TO THIS BOOK, if you want an original story that is beautifully written, a wonderful reader, and most of all characters that will make you laugh and break your heart. I have read this book, but oh so glad I listen to it. I did cry several, well more than several times, so be careful if you are driving and listening. I will also add, my husband reads SF and Mysteries, and he enjoyed the story but it was not his favorite, so some people might not enjoy it. But I would say give it a try because if you like it...you will LOVE IT!
The reader did a good job; the story was just not that good for me. On the other hand, I did buy the book for my grandson. He, age 13, is enjoying the story very much.
Yes, I think young teens would like to follow the young hero.
This is was one of the first books I downloaded and did not notice it was for teens. But it was entertaining for a short road trip we took up to the mountains. Plus I found a good book to buy for my grandson.
It is Right and Just!
Other Trollope books for sure. It is always about morals, ethics and doing what is right no matter the consciousness. Of course in his books there is always a good ending, but the ideas behind the decisions are good to read, good to ponder. Great ideas for discussion in a book group.
No, but I will. Enjoyed his read.
Oh, the endings of a Trollope novel are always the best moments. I love how they turn out, how doing "The Right Thing" is always the right decision.
Many summers ago I read 5 or 6 of Anthony Trollop's novels; this was one of them. But the reader was so entertaining, and the parts of the book that take place in America are so fun to listen to and visualize. I did enjoy every hour of this book.
Listen. Learn. WOW!
FANTASTIC! This is a one of those books that, for me at least, would be very hard to read. Many foreign names, places, scientific words and phases..so much easier to just listen and enjoy. Matthews has a charming voice; loved hearing him read.
There is so much in this book; it is hard to listen to it all in, say a long airplane trip. I found it overwhelming at times to learn so much in an hour, no sometimes, in 10 minutes, I was gleaning information so fast, I often had to stop and rewind. However; that is what I enjoy about the book. One can listen for hours; put it away and come back to it, no problem with trying to remember a plot; it is all new and entertaining.
