Russka is the story of four families who are divided by ethnicity but united in shaping the destiny of Russia. From a single riverside village situated at one of the country’s geographic crossroads, Russia’s Slav peasant origins are influenced by the Greco-Iranian, Khazar, Jewish, and Mongol invasions. Unified by this one place, the many cultures blend to form a rich and varied tapestry. Rutherfurd’s grand saga is as multifaceted as Russia itself.

I chose to listen to this book in preparation for my 3-week trip to Russia. My prior understanding of Russia had been picked up from Dr. Zhivago and remembering the Cold War when Krushchev was their leader. Rutherfurd has done an excellent job of putting Russian history into story form. In fact, after the trip, I listened to the book a second time because now I can put some things in perspective with what I had experienced when I was there. What a great learning experience!

The dust storms that terrorized America's High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since, and the stories of the people that held on have never been fully told. Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist and author Timothy Egan follows a half-dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region.

    Story

Classes in our schools have not emphasized enough how difficult this time was in our history. If I taught American History, this would be a required read for all students. It makes me wonder if we aren't close to creating an agriculture disaster again by forcing farms to use genetically modified seeds. However, that would be another story.

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

Coauthored with his wife Isabella, The Solitary Envoy begins the glorious Heirs of Acadia series of historical novels set in the early days of the American Republic. Erica Langston's comfortable life in Georgetown is threatened when the British invade. Soon she must begin a journey that will change her life forever.

What would have made The Solitary Envoy better?

The presentation of the story was fine; however, I am not sure what the readability level of this book would be. I believe that it would be very appropriate for middle school students. The story was very predictable and "pollyannaish".

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Solitary Envoy?

This entire book should be removed from Audible for adults and put in the children's section.

George Guidall sounds like a craggy old cowboy from Wyoming and seems to fit the part he is reading.

Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos.
