  • The Other Boleyn Girl

    • UNABRIDGED (23 hrs and 4 mins)
    • By Philippa Gregory
    • Narrated By Susan Lyons

When Mary Boleyn comes to court as an innocent girl of 14, she catches the eye of Henry VIII. Dazzled by the king, Mary falls in love with both the golden prince and her growing role as an unofficial queen. However, she soon realizes just how much she is a pawn in her family's ambitious plots when the king's interest begins to wane and she is forced to step aside for her best friend and rival: her powerfully ambitious sister, Anne Boleyn.

What made the experience of listening to The Other Boleyn Girl the most enjoyable?

Learning the history in a way that is so easy. I can't wait to get in my car to drive somewhere because I listen to this story. It is very well written, it flows, has intrigue, doesn't get hung up on lots of details, yet one learns many details woven into the fabric of the story. The dialogue is great!

Who was your favorite character and why?

William Stafford. He is level headed, loving, supportive.

What about Susan Lyons’s performance did you like?

    Credible voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I listen to it while driving.

    Any additional comments?

I have listened to other books in the Philippa Gregory series and will listen to more. They are among the best historical fiction I have "read".

  • Shaken: Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels, Book 7

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By J. A. Konrath
    • Narrated By Angela Dawe, Dick Hill
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Chicago cop Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels has chased and caught dozens of dangerous criminals over the course of her career. But she’s about to meet her match. When Jack wakes up in a storage locker, bound and gagged, she knows with chilling certainty who her abductor is. He’s called “Mr. K,” and more than two hundred homicides have been attributed to him. His victims have died in the most horrible ways imaginable; he is the essence of evil....

The order of story, jumping between three different time periods, was not enjoyable. I think J A Konrath has done this in previous books, but not to this extent. I listen to audio books while driving, in about 45 minute segments. It might take me 8-10 time periods to get through an audio book. I kept getting confused with where I was in the story. (The Jack Daniels character is one I know well as I have listened to all previous books, so I had a solid grasp of Jack's life. This still didn't help.)

I think I saw an option to listen to the book in chronological order. I would recommend that.

I still gave it 4 stars as I like the characters; they make me chuckle.
