Yes, because this book tells a compelling story. The truth about Joseph P. Kennedy may not be as scandalous as the myths that abound, but this honest appraisal of the man is even more engaging because we learn not only of this one person but also share his views and insights into the world of the early and middle 20th century.
The section dealing with Kennedy's venture into motion pictures. i would venture that very few people today appreciate Kennedy's importance as a movie mogul and how his influence was the catalyst that turned Hollywood into a modern motion picture industry.
He reads well and keeps the attention of the listener. He is excellent at changing his accent to approximate the voice of the speaker when reading quotations.
Unexpected stories juxtaposed.
This is quite a unique read.
The two narrators, Nao and Ruth, are both exceptionally performed by Ozeki. In fact, the reading of this book by the author is so well done that some of the meaning would be lost if one simply read the book alone.
The death of Jiko was quite moving and how it brings Nao closer to her father.
I would recommend this audiobook to a friend because of the story. Even though we know that New York Penn Station was built and the tunnels were completed, hearing the amazing feats of engineering that needed to be accomplished and fact that they did not completely understand all that they were doing makes for an engaging story. And then there is the political corruption in New York at the time and how the Pennsylvania Rail Road refused to do anything underhanded to build these projects. It is surprising how much depended on luck and determination.
This is the first performance that I have heard of David Drummond's. He was an exceptional reader.
Hearing this crazy story and having no idea where things were going to go next.
The visit to the zoo.
Hearing the story in her own voice made it believable. If an actor had read it one would have a difficult time believing it was true.
Given all that the Walls children endured, it is amazing to see the strength of their family.
